Marion Jackson’s new book will help you ID trees as you travel Indiana.
Marion T. Jackson has compiled a new field guide about trees… 101 Trees of Indiana. IU Press put this in a 4 1/4-inch by 8 1/4-inch paperback book published in June. It will fit in your backpack and probably your hiking pants, maybe even in your car’s glovebox.
Dr. Jackson teaches at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute. He is emeritus professor of ecology at Indiana State University.
Jackson’s tree descriptions are tied to illustrations by Katherine Harrington, an Indianapolis designer. Photographer Ron Rathfon made the pictures of the trees; he is a forester for Purdue University, where he conducts applied forestry research and manages the forest.
The book contains all you need to ID trees in any season, and is as thorough as Charles Deam’s 1953 Trees of Indiana (third edition).
With images and text printed on opposing pages, you won’t have to flip back and forth like many books of this sort.
101 Trees of Indiana (ISBN 0-253-21694-X) is available for $19.95 from IU Press, http://iupress.indiana.edu or by phone, 800-842-6796.
