Indiana Heritage Corps (IHC), an AmeriCorps program run by the Indiana Division of State Parks and Reservoirs
is currently in its second program year. We are more than halfway through our 3-year program, which will conclude at the end of August in 2014. This federal grant program is funded by the Corporation of National Community Service (CNCS) through the Indiana Office of Community and Faith-based Initiatives (OFBCI).
AmeriCorps members serving in the Indiana Heritage Corps program are creating, completing, and rehabilitating several miles of trails at Pokagon State Park/Trine State Recreation Area, Fort Harrison, O'Bannon Woods, and Brown County State Parks during this summer.
Most of the trails located within these properties were constructed prior to the development of sustainable trail guidelines and consequently suffer from a variety of issues, ranging from poor design and layout to heavy wear-and-tear from overuse. Expanding and connecting existing pedestrian, equestrian, bike and non-motorized vehicle trails on our properties will continue to invite and engage citizens to be active and become healthier.
IHC members participate in the program as volunteers and do not earn wages while serving in the AmeriCorps program. However, trail crew members do receive complimentary onsite housing at the properties, a monthly living stipend, uniforms and supplies, and a complimentary State Park Pass for their participation in the program. In addition to the incentives that we offer specifically for the Indiana Heritage Corps program, trail crew members earn an education award (federal pell grant) from the CNCS for completing an AmeriCorps program.
