General Snowmobile Information
Indiana Snowmobile Trails are provided through the cooperation of local snowmobile clubs, the Indiana Snowmobilers Association, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
The snowmobile trails are open in December, January, February, and March when snow conditions are adequate and the trails are posted as "open." There are trailheads at each trail for parking vehicles and trailers. Only registered snowmobiles may be used on the trails. The Department of Natural Resources' Indiana Snowmobile Trails Program is completely funded by snowmobile registration fees; law enforcement activities, including the Snowmobile Safety Course, are also funded by the registration fees. The cost of registering a snowmobile in Indiana is $30.00 for 3 years.
State Snowmobile Trails
Miami Snowmobile Trails
64 miles of trail developed by the Elkhart County Snowmobile Club around Goshen, Bristol, and Middlebury in northeastern Elkhart County (the trails are named after the Miami Indians who lived in the area for nearly two centuries prior to the Potawatomi Indians and the settlers from Europe and the American colonies).
Potawatomi Snowmobile Trails
13 miles of trails developed by the Potawatomi Snowmobile Club north of Angola in Steuben County (the trails are named after the Potawatomi Indians who once claimed about one million acres of land in the Great Lakes region, including much of northern Indiana and the present site of Chicago).
Heritage Snowmobile Trail
34 miles of trail developed by the Hoagland Blizzard Blazers Snowmobile Club around Hoagland and Maples in southeastern Allen County (the trail name refers to "President's Corners" where the townships of Jefferson, Jackson, Madison, and Monroe join near Hoagland).
Buffalo Run Snowmobile Trails
73 miles of trails developed by the Michiana Trail Riders Coalition (formerly the South Bend Snowmobile Club) west of South Bend in St. Joseph County (the trail name refers to the buffalo herds which once roamed through north central Indiana).
The Salamonie Trail
Maintained by the Salamonie Trailmasters Snowmobile Club for snowmobiling and consists of about 40 miles of trail on public land along the south side of Salamonie Reservoir in Wabash and Huntington counties (Salamonie is derived from a Miami Indian tribe word for bloodroot from which yellow dye was obtained).
Snowmobile Trail Regulations
Most trails have been leased from private landowners for public use. CONTINUED USE OF THE TRAIL DEPENDS UPON YOUR COOPERATION IN FOLLOWING THESE REGULATIONS:
1. Snowmobile trails are open from December 1st to March 31st only when the trail is posted as "open."
2. All snowmobiles must be registered.
3. The use of trails by wheeled vehicles is stricktly prohibited.
4. STAY ON THE TRAIL; leavin the marked trail is trespassing, and you can be prosecuted.
5. All Indiana Snowmobile Laws (Indiana Code 14-16-1) must be obeyed.
Snowmobiling on county roads is allowed in some counties. The sheriff's office of each county can provide up-to-date information on its snowmobiling laws. Some trails may use county roads as part of the trail. All road laws, including holding a vailid drives licence, must be obeyed.
