Professional Development and the NREC
The programs of the NREC are approved providers of Certification Renewal Units (CRUs) and Professional Growth Points for teacher license renewal in Indiana.
Depending on the license renewal program you are in, you can earn either CRUs or Professional Growth Points for participating in workshops offered by Project Learning Tree, Go FishIN, Hoosier Riverwatch, Project WILD, Project WET or the NREC.
Certification Renewal Units (CRUs)
We have application forms for CRUs. Just ask your instructor. We will complete the necessary paperwork for the Division of Professional Standards and send it to them. We will also send you a CRU Certificate for your portfolio. Two hours of contact time will earn one CRU. Most workshops will provide 3 CRUs.
Professional Growth Points
Coursework completed as part of a Professional Growth Plan for license renewal does not require prior approval. Candidates supply official transcripts of completed courses as part of the documentation in the Professional Growth Plan. The educator chooses up to three goals that should be aligned with the PL-221 plans, Indiana Academic Standards and the appropriate Indiana Professional Standards for the individual. The goals should focus on specific professional development objectives.
Because our programs are interdisciplinary, our workshops will probably meet many of the goals teachers choose for their plan. Content areas where our programs may apply include Early and Middle Childhood Specialist, English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Physical Education, Reading, Science and Social Studies.
College Credit
Project Learning Tree, Project WET, and Project Wild participants can obtain college credit by completing an independent study project through Ball State University, Indiana University, Indiana State University, or Purdue University. Hoosier Riverwatch also has a partnership with Purdue. It is the responsibility of the participant to pay applicable course fees and make all arrangements with the appropriate University Faculty. Contact the NREC for additional details.
