Go FishIN FAQs

Q: Is the program just about fishing?
A: NO: The Go FishIN program is an educational approach that uses recreational fishing to teach students the connections between fishing, the environment, and their community.

Q: Is there a connection to school curriculum?
A: YES: Any school classroom can utilize some portion of the Go FishIN program. Go FishIN activities cover a broad range of school subjects, such as ecology, art, biology, mathematics and even creative writing.

Q: Does every student need a fishing license?
A: NO: In Indiana, persons under the age of 17 are not required to have a fishing license. Adult educators will need to purchase a fishing license if they intend to fish in public water.

Q: Will I have to buy fishing equipment?
A: NO: After becoming a crew captain for the Go FishIN program, you will be able to borrow rods and reels from the DNR free of charge. Crew captains are encouraged to keep the rods and reels on site for continual use. All other necessary equipment will be provided by the aquatic resources education office. However, adult educators planning to fish in public waters will need to purchase a fishing license.

Q: Do we have to eat the fish?
A: NO: Although fish are a delicious natural food found in Indiana, they can be released back into the water. Special handling techniques taught in the Go FishIN program help reduce fish injuries.

Q: How old should Go FishIN students be?
A: The Go FishIN program is designed for ages 12 - 15; however, with minor modifications, the program is applicable to all ages.
