The Lake Michigan Coastal Program will be sponsoring Coast Week 2008 September 5-14. The Coastal Program and several other organizations are working together to sponsor a wide variety of events to celebrate the diversity and splendor of the Lake Michigan coastal region. Events include the Denis Sullivan Sail, the Gary Clean Water Celebration at Marquette Park, an informative hike of historical interest through the Indiana Dunes, and the Michigan City Eco-Fit Challenge, just to name a few. Wherever you're interests lie, there is sure to be an activity or two that you'll find interesting and exciting. We look forward to sharing the wonders of our Lake Michigan Coastal Region with you!

Denis Sullivan - Exploring Indiana Maritime History 
Event Description
The Denis Sullivan schooner will be in port as part of the Indiana Coast Week activities. The Sullivan is normally docked in Milwaukee. All events are free of charge courtesy of the LMCP and NOAA grant funding. Deck Tours are open to the public. Day Sails require advanced registration as the ship has a 50 person capacity. There will be 35 reservations for each Day Sail slot and 15 slots held in reserve for walk up registrations day of. *Day Sails are weather dependent. Please wear appropriate attire.

Gary's 4th Annual Water Quality Celebration
Event Description
The Gary Storm Water Management District (GSWMD) in collaboration with the City of Gary Department of Environmental Affairs and the Gary Parks Department is hosting the Fourth Annual Clean Water Celebration on Saturday, September 6,  2008 at the Marquette Park Lagoons - Area 5, Gary, Indiana starting at 10:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. The public is invited to a day long event that will include a press conference at 10:30 a.m. and lots of fun and educational activities for youth and adults to include free canoe training and canoe rides, fishing education, environmental booth/exhibits, visual presentations, art contest, face painting, and entertainment. Everyone who pledges for clean water will receive a free gift.

This event is part of The Gary Storm Water Management District's Storm Water Public Education and Outreach Program. Storm water run off can cause water pollution when oil, gasoline, fertilizer, pesticides, and pet and animal waste are washed off streets and lawns by rain and melted snow.

Our project objective is to reduce the impacts of storm water pollution emphasizing that everyone can take small steps to avoid contributing to the build up of waste materials on the land in our communities. These include the correct handling of garbage and household hazardous waste such as used batteries, electronics, and paint thinner, proper lawn care practices, and auto and septic system maintenance in our homes and neighborhoods.

Dunes History Hike
Event Description
As part of the Indiana Dunes State Park "History Comes Alive Weekend", special tours will be offered to highlight the unique history of the Indiana Dunes.  Topics range from Native American Camps, Civil War Guard Towers, and early settlement towns.  The hike will end at a special French fur trading re-enactment provided by the Ouitotenon Brigade at the state park beach.  Total hike time approx 1 hour.

The INShape Walk
Event Description
The INShape walk is part of Gov. Daniel's INShape Indiana program. On September 6, we meet at the Beach Pavilion for a 2 mile healthy walk into the high dunes and back. We pass Mt Tom before returning along the beach. Participants can print off a free coupon into the park that day by going to www.INSHAPE.in.gov.  The hike begins at 10am, and free t shirts and water bottles are provided to participants.

Event Description
Just beyond the shores of Indiana Dunes State Park lies one of the most tragic shipwreck disasters in Indiana waters.  This indoor program will introduce visitors to the story of the J.D. Marshall.  Real artifacts will be used, and an optional car pool tour to point out where she lies will be offered.

Event Description
More birds can be found in the Indiana Dunes then in any other area of Indiana.  These migrants use Lake Michigan's north-south orientation to migrate to the lower Midwest.  This movement has been coined as the "funnel effect".  Renowned birder and author Ken Brock will present a special program highlighting the birds of this area and the birding opportunities that exist along the Indiana Dunes

Calumet Prairie Guided Tour
Event Description
Calumet Prairie is a 141 acre natural area preserving high quaility wet sand prairie and marsh plant communities.  Calumet Prairie is owned by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Nature Preserves and is home to a few plant and animal species.  Recently, a Lake Michigan Coastal Program grant was used to restore 15 acres of wet prairie habitat at Calumet Prairie.  The hike will focus on prairie plants and the restoration work that has begun at Calumet Prairie

Michigan City Eco-Fit Challenge
Event Description
Join us at one of the most unique adventure races in the United States. The Inaugural Michigan City Eco-Fit Challenge is a one of a kind, environmentally friendly, multi-sport event that will give participants the chance to run, paddle and spike into the sunset. Run 8K in the scenic Michigan City coastal region, paddle 16K on Lake Michigan, canoe or kayak the Trail Creek tributary, and play beach volleyball on the sands of one of the magnificent Great Lakes. Both experienced competitors as well as novice recreational participants are welcome. Multi-Sports events include the Michigan City Biathlon - Run & Kayak and the Crazy Tri - Run, Paddle, & Play Volleyball. Single sports include the 16th annual Tower Run, Ride the Wave Regatta Canoe & Kayak Races, the Spike to Sunset Volleyball Tournament, and the Trail Creek Fun Float non-competitive Canoe & Kayak float. Local environmental organizations as well as other supporters will have information booths at the JC Stage throughout the day to tell everyone about what they do.

Save the Dunes Annual Fall Hike- Join Save the Dunes members as we hike the new Portage Lakefront Park. The new 60- acre park is part of the Indiana Dunes Lakeshore and is part of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. It is the first project to implement Congressman's Visclosky's Marquette Plan vision.Following the hike will be the Annual Fall Dinner with key note speaker Constantine (Costa) Dillon Superintendent , Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
