Coastal Nonpoint Pollution Control Program

Coastal Rain Gardens

When it rains where does the water from your downspout go and what is it carrying with it? If you live in the Little Calumet-Galien watershed, eventually that rain is going to make its way to Lake Michigan. What it’s carrying all depends on surrounding land uses. In an urban setting potential pollutants such as sediment, nutrients, pathogens and heavy metals can be carried as runoff to our local lakes and streams. One potential solution for homeowners is to install a rain garden. Rain gardens mimic predevelopment site conditions by infiltrating and filtering runoff just as nature intended. Included below is a how-to manual that will take you through the steps needed to install your own rain garden. For many this can be a great weekend project. You can beautify your yard, protect our local lakes and streams, and provide valuable urban wildlife habitat. Not bad for a weekends work.

Coastal Nonpoint Grants Program

The Coastal Nonpoint Program has established a pass-through grant program to assist local communities and watershed partners in protecting coastal water quality and aquatic habitats. The program addresses a number of nonpoint source pollution catergories including agriculture, urban/rural areas, hydromodification, and marinas along with the protection of wetland and riparian areas. The Coastal Nonpoint Program uses the watershed approach in implmenting its program. Therefore all projects must be located within the Little Calumet-Galien Watershed or clearly demonstrate a direct benefit to the program area.

Grant proposals are due by C.O.B. on Monday, September 14, 2009.

Based on Indiana's 6217 Program document submittal in 2005, both NOAA and EPA found that the program meets many of the requirements of section 6217 and will approve the program with conditions. The Findings and Environmental Assessment documents below outline NOAA's and EPA's findings and conditions that Indiana must meet for full 6217 program approval.
