Historic Preservation Month 2008
May is rapidly approaching so the time has come to celebrate something near and dear to all of us at the DHPA and hopefully to all of you: historic preservation.

The national theme this year is “Preservation Matters” so it is up to all of us, as stewards of Indiana’s historic resources, to promote preservation.

This year we’re partnering with INShape Indiana, the governor’s fitness initiative, to bring you INShape in Historic Indiana— a series of walking tours around the state that teach you about history and architecture while getting you a little exercise!

Check out the many events happening around the state.

SHAARD Database Launched
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology (DHPA) are pleased to announce launching of the State Historic Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD), which allows users to search cultural resource information on known historic properties and archaeological  resources throughout Indiana. To learn more about SHAARD and the use of the database, see below.

SHAARD Access

Access to all of the historic property (above ground) data eventually will be available on the web and open to the public. Currently, SHAARD includes data from the Indiana Cemetery Registry, on historic bridges, from properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and on historic theaters in Indiana. As funds become available, all the information from the Indiana Survey of Historic Sites and Structures files will be added to the database.

The archaeological data contained in SHAARD was collected from previously conducted cultural resource inventories, National Register listings, research projects, and cultural resource management project reports. As funds become available, all of the archaeological survey information in the division files will be entered into SHAARD. Access to archaeological site locations and detailed site information is restricted and password protected and will be granted to qualified individuals who meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards with a specialty in prehistoric, historic and/or underwater archaeology or geomorphology.

At this time, there is not a GIS component to SHAARD. The DHPA is currently digitizing site locations through different initiatives and hopes to have a GIS component of SHAARD available in the future.

SHAARD was made possible with financial support from the Federal Highway Administration, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and the Historic Preservation Fund of the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service.
