Youth Hunting Events

Youth Hunting The list of planned events includes:

DEER EVENTS

A youth deer hunting season will take place on Sept. 27 and 28, 2008. Any youth age 15 years or younger on the date of the hunt, and accompanied by an adult of at least 18 years of age, can take one antlerless deer during this special youth deer season. This deer is in addition to any deer taken during any other season. While the accompanying adult cannot take a deer when in the field with the youth hunter, both the youth and the adult must wear hunter orange.

The youth hunter must possess a valid youth hunting license, which includes the completion of a hunter education class, but the accompanying adult does not need to possess a hunting license while in the field with the youth hunter. The youth hunter must comply with all deer hunting regulations including wearing hunter orange, tagging the deer and checking it in to a deer check station within 48 hours of the take. The youth hunter may use a legal shotgun, muzzleloader, bow and arrow, or crossbow, to take the deer, but may possess only one type of equipment to take  a deer while in the field. The accompanying adult cannot possess a firearm, muzzleloader, bow and arrow or crossbow while in the field with the youth hunter.

  • Youth Deer Hunt at Sugar Ridge FWA

    This annual event will be held on the statewide youth deer hunt. The time is open-ended, youth can just show up anytime during the day. There will be no restrictions on the number of youth hunters allowed on the property for this hunt, but the standard hunter sign-in procedures will be in effect. Special demonstrations and events will take place at the property office throughout the day on Saturday. Youth are not required to hunt on Sugar Ridge FWA to qualify to attend these events. There may be some door prizes available as the event is typically sponsored in part by the local chapter of Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA.) There will deer hunting related handouts, videos, hands-on demonstrations on tree stand safety and much more. Lunch is may be provided.

    Kids that are successful in harvesting a deer are especially encouraged to stop by the event for check-in and plan to have their picture taken with the trophy. Successful hunters should also plan on sharing their hunting story with the gang.

TURKEY EVENTS

A youth wild turkey season will take place on April 19 and 20, 2008. It will allow a youth turkey hunter, fifteen years old or younger to take a bearded or male wild turkey. The youth must be accompanied by an adult of at least eighteen years of age.

The youth hunter may use any legal shotgun, bow and arrow, or crossbow. The adult accompanying the youth hunter must not possess a firearm, bow and arrow, or crossbow while in the field, and does not need to possess a turkey hunting license. The youth hunter may take only one bearded or male wild turkey during the spring season, inclusive of the youth and regular spring turkey seasons. The youth must be properly licensed to take a wild turkey and comply with all tagging and check-in requirements.

    Winamac FWA will be hosting a free youth turkey hunting event on Saturday, April 12, 2008 from 5:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. ET. This event is open to all youngsters and their parents who are interested in learning more about wild turkeys and turkey hunting. The program will consist of conducting an early morning gobble count to listen for wild turkeys gobbling on the roost and identification of turkey sign in the field. Demonstrations will be conducted on turkey calling & types of calls, proper gear, hunting techniques, and cleaning and cooking tips.

    Sign up for this event will begin on March 10, 2008 by registering at the property office or by calling (574) 946-4422 during office hours 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.

  • Tri-County FWA Youth Turkey Hunt

    Activities: A fun-filled day or two of turkey hunting to successful applicants. n addition all applicants receive a free one year membership to Wild Turkey Federation, and Turkey Hunting Safety DVD & practice targets.

    Tri-County FWA will hold local pre-registrations and drawings at the property for the half-day hunts. Hunts will run one-half hour before sunrise until 1 p.m. (EST). A youth hunter may be drawn for either one or both hunt days, depending on the number of applicants. Youth hunters, or an adult representing them, can register in person at the property they wish to hunt from March 10 to March 21, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The drawing will be held March 24. All applicants will be notified of drawing results by mail. Tri-County will draw approximately ten per day.

    This event will be open to any youth who would like to learn more about turkey hunting in Indiana. Participants will meet before dawn to listen for turkeys gobbling and count the number of birds they hear. Demonstrations will take place for calling, setting up decoys, and turkey behavior. All participants will have the opportunity to pattern their turkey hunting shotgun with the assistance of NRA certified instructors. There will also be a scavenger hunt on the property for all things relating to turkey hunting. Kids will also get to make their own turkey call.

  • Willow Slough FWA Youth Turkey Seminar

    Young turkey hunters are invited to Willow Slough to gear up for the youth turkey season that will start on April 19. The event will convene at the headquarters at 5:30 a.m. (CST) where kids will venture out to listen for turkey gobbling. Kids will then gather back at the office for turkey calling, hunting tips, turkey biology, and hunting videos.

    The program will conclude at the shooting range with shotgun patterning, ending between 10 and 10:30 a.m. (CST). The office may be called at (219) 285-2704 for details.

  • Jasper-Pulaski Youth Turkey Hunt

    You may pre-register for the drawing March 10-21; 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. ET (8 a.m.- 2 p.m. CST). The drawing will be held on March 24. Successful and unsuccessful hunters will be notified by mail.

       • Youth must be age 15 or younger at time of the hunt.
       • Youth hunters, or an adult representing them, must register in person at the property during the registration period
       • Depending on the number of applicants the youth may receive one or both days of the hunt period.
       • Each youth turkey hunter will receive a complimentary one year membership to the National Wild Turkey Federation, Jakes     or Xtreme Jakes, depending on their age, with parental permission.

    Additionally, anyone who is interested in turkey hunting but hasn’t yet had the opportunity to experience it is encouraged to contact Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area and ask about the Outdoor Mentors Program.

    Please note that to maximize the success of this program; potential participants must be located within a reasonable distance of Medaryville, IN or willing to travel to Jasper-Pulaski FWA several times per year at odd hours, during inclement weather, and at their own expense to meet with their mentors and get the most out of this program.

  • Sugar Ridge Turkey Hunting Seminar

    This annual event will be held on the April 12, 2008. The event activities will be from 5:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Space is limited, so attendance is restricted to the first 30 pre-registered youth age 15 and younger. A parent or guardian must attend with the youngster. Participants need to register at Sugar Ridge FWA for the event by April 5, 2008.

    The day will start at 5:30 a.m. with the participants at pre-assigned listening locations on the property. From 5:30-6:30 a.m., youngsters will listen for and record turkey gobbling activity. Listening locations will be selected for the participants and they will be notified by mail. From 6:30 - 7:30 a.m., the participants will meet back at the property office to compile gobble count data and compare stories. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

    The classroom portion of the seminar will begin at 7:30 a.m. The first portion of the classroom section will be on turkey hunting tools, tips and tactics. Next, class instructors will talk about turkey calls and calling. Then some time will be spent on the specifics of turkey hunting safety.

    The group will move to the Sugar Ridge FWA shotgun range to practice “sighting-in” turkey guns. Shells and guns for "sighting-in" practice will be provided. If the youth hunter has their own gun to sight-in they will need to bring their own ammunition. Their guns must be carried to the range unloaded and in a case. Their guns must be inspected and confirmed safe by the range officer prior to shooting.

    After the range the whole gang should return to the office for lunch and possible door prizes. The seminar is slated to conclude at 1:30 p.m.

    This annual event is held during the youth turkey hunting season. Kids interested in hunting turkeys on Sugar Ridge FWA during this season will need to pre-register for hunting opportunities on the property. Quality turkey hunting areas on Sugar Ridge FWA abound, but to ensure all the kids have a high quality hunt, hunting opportunities may be limited through a random drawing. Youth will need to apply at the Sugar Ridge FWA office. Trained wildlife experts will be on staff to check-in harvested birds, share stories and information. Successful hunters are encouraged to bring their bird to the office to show him off and get their picture taken for the Sugar Ridge hunting wall-of-fame.

    Hunters not yet 16 years old who have attended a Hunters Education Course can take a bearded/male turkey during this weekend.

    The youth hunters or their representative may sign-up at Minnehaha Check Station starting Monday, March 10th through Friday, March 21st from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. They must distinguish which property they want to hunt at the time of sign-in. The choices are Minnehaha FWA, Hillenbrand FWA, Chinook FWA, or Fairbanks Landing FWA. Should it be necessary, a draw will be conducted as each property has hunter limits during turkey season. The hunts are half-day hunts – one-half hour before sunrise until 1 p.m.

    Crosley will host a waterfowl hunt on Stucker Fork FWA for kids interested in learning to duck hunt. Kids will be mentored by an experienced duck hunter on calling, decoy placement, and hunting. What to bring is TBD. Lunch will be provided after the hunt. Dates will be during the fall youth duck season, 2008. Pre-registration is required. TRAPPING EVENTS

  • Beginning Trapper Clinic & Trapper Education Course at Sugar Ridge FWA

    This annual class is specifically oriented toward beginning trappers. The date and times for the 2008 class has not yet been set, however, the class always takes place during the month of September. The clinic is for all ages, but class space is limited to 25 attendees. People interested in attending the clinic will need to pre-register.

    The following subjects will be covered at the class:
    - Furbearer management, behavior and disease
    - Trapper safety
    - Historical culture of Trapping
    - Sportsmanship rules and regulations and trapper ethics
    - Trapping technology
    - Equipment modification and preparation for upland and water trapping
    - Trap setting demonstrations by well know trappers
    - Proper fur handling techniques
    - Trapline management
    - And MUCH more!

    A good portion of the class time will be spent checking an active trap-line with the clinic instructors. Attendees should dress for the weather as the majority of the class will take place outdoors. Rubber knee or hip boots will be handy for checking the class trap-line.

FREE YOUTH EVENTS

Four youth free hunting days will be offered this year, Sept. 1-2 and Nov. 29-30, 2008. Any resident age 15 years or younger on the date of the hunt, and accompanied by an adult of at least 18 years of age, can take any legal game in season during these youth free hunting weekends. The youth hunter does not have to possess a hunting license, HIP number or any stamp but must comply with all hunting regulations.

The accompanying adult must be in close enough proximity in order to monitor and communicate with the youth hunter at all times and may assist the youth hunter, including calling, but may not carry a firearm or bow and arrow. The accompanying adult must possess a valid hunting license, unless exempted from needing a license.

  • Glendale Recruitment & Retention, Put – Take Pheasant Hunt

    This annual dove hunt event is sponsored by Waterfowl USA, and NWTF. This year’s hunt is slated for September 1, 2008. Event times have not yet been established, but it is typically 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Youth must be age 15 and younger and are required to be with a parent or guardian during the hunt. Hunting space is limited to 75 youth, so interested kids will need to pre-register. Registration dates are not yet set. For more information call or visit the Sugar Ridge Fish and Wildlife Area or contact the Evansville chapter of Waterfowl USA.

    Kids should plan to bring their shotgun and plenty of shells. Remember, however, all state and federal hunting regulations will be in effect, so check the 2008 early migratory bird regulations and ensure your permits and equipment are in order. Waterfowl USA typically provides lunch, drinks and snacks for all the kids.

    Crosley will host a squirrel hunt with squirrel dogs. Hunt dates are TBD, but during late squirrel season. What to bring and what is provided is TBD.

    This event will be sponsored by the Pike County Bowhunters Association and is open to all youth interested in learning about bows, bow hunting and archery. The event will be held at Sugar Ridge FWA on Area I. The event will be a target shoot at foam 3-D animal targets. Kids will walk a course (like golf) and shoot a variety of animal target that will placed to represent real bow hunting shot opportunities. Kids will walk the course in small groups with an experienced archer and hunter who will guide their shooting and help them with their technique. Youngsters are encouraged to bring their own bow and arrows if they have one, otherwise a bow and arrow will be provided. The event is scheduled for June 21, 2008. Instructors will take groups out on the course from 7:30 a.m. - noon.

    Lunch will be provided. Awards, door prizes and some “novelty” shots should round-out the days’ events.

    This opportunity is available to women who have participated in the Becoming an Outdoor Woman program. In conjunction with the put and take pheasant program, local sportsmen, sportswomen and their dogs will provide an opportunity for participants to hunt pheasants over dogs.
