Phil Bloom, director of the DNR Division of Communications and editor of OI, was recently elected president of the Outdoor Writers Association of America for 2008-09. Bloom’s one-year term follows his terms as a board member, secretary and vice president.
In addition to writing hundreds of outdoor columns before his arrival at the DNR, he also penned the book “Hiking Indiana.”
OWAA, which was formed in 1927, has more than 1,300 members and is the world’s largest organization of professional outdoor communicators.
Gov. Mitch Daniels recently honored some 1,600 state employees, including many from the DNR, who assisted with the state’s flood response this summer. The governor, Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman and Department of Homeland Security executive director Joe Wainscott spoke to a crowd of about 400 in the Statehouse Rotunda on Aug. 11.
“It is important to know that when you need it, there are hard-working public servants who do not let anything get in the way in taking care of folks in need,” he said. The governor added that the efforts of state employees earned the admiration of state, local and national authorities.
