Mary Jane Michalak serves as the Director of Communications for the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance, which oversees the state’s property tax system. In this role, Michalak serves as the primary state spokesperson for property taxes, in addition to leading and coordinating a large range of public relations activities including community outreach, media relations, and counseling the Commissioner on potential outcomes and impacts of decisions and actions of the Department.
Michalak joined the DLGF in August 2007 after spending two years working as a Communications Specialist for the Indiana Department of Education under the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Prior to entering public relations, Michalak worked as a Statehouse reporter for a small niche publication, covering primarily education-related issues and state government for two years.
Michalak graduated from IUPUI with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with a concentration in literature and focus in public relations. While a student at IUPUI, she wrote for the student newspaper, earning a first-place award for “Best Non-Deadline News Reporting” from the Indiana Collegiate Press Association and a third-place award for “Best In-Depth or Series Reporting” from the Indiana Society of Professional Journalists. Additionally, one of the stories she wrote for the paper was published in the New York Times Online Edition on their college page.
