The IDHS Division of Fire and Building Safety investigates suspicious fires, promotes fire prevention, administers building plan review, enforces fire and building safety codes in all public buildings, regulates and coordinates emergency services, emergency medical services and hazardous material response and oversees and conducts inspections of child care facilities, boilers and pressure vessels, elevators and amusement rides.

James Greeson is a lifetime resident of Indianapolis graduating from Thomas Carr Howe High School. He received a degree from Indiana Vocational Technical College and also attended Indiana University Purdue University, Indianapolis and the National Fire Academy completing several courses in Command and Control of Major Incidents. Jim is a veteran of the U. S. Army.

He joined the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) in January of 1970. Chief Greeson served for twenty-six years in the Suppression Division with his last assignment of Shift Commander. In addition to fire suppression he has also served as a Deputy Chief of Administration, Deputy Chief of Operations. He has earned the respect of all who work with him.

He was appointed Chief of IFD in June of 2004, and held that position until his retirement in April 2008 completing thirty eight years of service to the citizens of Indianapolis. Chief Greeson was appointed Indiana State Fire Marshal by Former Governor Mitchell Daniels on May 12, 2008.

He earned the Bronze Medal for Track and Field 2001 World Police and Fire Games, Administrative Fire Fighter of the Year, Unit Commendation for Leadership and Rescue, Induction into the Red Cross Hall of Fame, Fire Fighter of the Year Nomination, and Certificate of Appreciation for Rescues.

Greeson has served a representative for the IFD during the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the International Association of Fire Fighters Ten Cities Fitness Wellness Initiative. He served on the 2004 World Swimming Championship’s Planning Committee, the IFD Promotion Process Committee, 2001 World Police and Fire Games, and Indiana Public Safety Training Institute. Greeson was instrumental in the writing and passage of legislation that created the Indiana Fire & Public Safety Academy Training System.

Presently, he serves on the Board of Directors for the Hoosier Burn Camp, the Greater Indianapolis Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Board of Fire Fighter Personnel Standards and Education, National Association of State Fire Marshals and is Chairman of the Indiana Emergency Response Commission.
