The IDHS Division of Fire and Building Safety investigates suspicious fires, promotes prevention, administers building plan review, enforces fire and building safety codes in all public buildings, regulates and coordinates emergency services, emergency medical services and hazardous material response and oversees and conducts inspections of child care facilities, boilers and pressure vessels, elevators and amusements.
James Greeson is a life time resident of Indianapolis graduating from Thomas Carr Howe High School. He received a degree from Indiana Vocational Technical College and also attended Indiana University Purdue University, Indianapolis.
He joined the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) in January of 1970. In addition to fire suppression he has also served as a Deputy Chief of Administration, Deputy Chief of Operations, and Shift Commander. He has earned the respect of those who work with him.
He was appointed Chief of IFD in June of 2004, and held that position until his retirement on April 28, 2008. James was appointed Indiana State Fire Marshal by Governor Daniels on May 12, 2008.
He earned the Bronze Medal for Track and Field 2001 World Police and Fire Games, Administrative Fire Fighter of the Year, Unit Commendation for Leadership and Rescue, Induction into the Red Cross Hall of Fame, Fire Fighter of the Year Nomination, and Certificate of Appreciation for Rescues.
He has served with the 2004 World Swimming Championships Operations Division, IFD Promotion Process Committee, 2001 World Police and Fire Games, Indiana Public Safety Training Institute, and the Riley Development Corporation.
He has been married to his wife, Judy, for 38 years. He has two sons and five grandchildren.
He and Judy attend the Castleton United Methodist Church, and are members of the Eagle Creek Sailing Club, Old Oakland Golf Club, and Charter Members of the Indianapolis Zoo.
