Course Description

With the incidence of drug impaired driving on the rise in Indiana, particularly driving under the influence of methamphetamine, prosecutors and law enforcement officers are in need of training to understand how methamphetamine and other drugs impair a person’s ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. Simultaneously, a growing number of law enforcement agencies are participating in the drug recognition evaluation and classification program (D.R.E.) and a greater numbers of officers are receiving D.R.E. training.

Consequently, local prosecutors need to increase their awareness and understanding of the D.R.E. program and how to effectively present D.R.E. examination evidence in court.

This one-day course will provide law enforcement officers and prosecutors with a review of the curriculum utilized in the D.R.E. training program, a dissection of the elements of a D.R.E. examination, a discussion of the various drug classifications and the types of reactions that each drug classification will present in a test subject, a review of case law and statutory authority necessary to admit D.R.E. evidence during trial, and instruction on how to counter the current defense tactics to D.R.E. evidence.
