Driver Safety Program

The BMV's driver safety program includes defensive driving curriculum that provides options for classroom instruction, or home study available online, in a workbook, or by video. A judge has the authority to order a driver who commits a traffic violation to attend a driver safety course. A judge may decide to use this requirement as an alternative to driver license suspension. Any person who, within a 12-month period, commits two or more traffic offenses that result in convictions will be required by the BMV to attend a BMV-approved driver safety program. Failure to complete the course or pay the fee within the specified time period will result in the suspension of the individual's driving privileges.

If a court orders you to take a driver safety program, the court may require classroom instruction only. Please check your notice from the BMV for information on enrolling in the classroom course. Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles Driver Safety Program courses do not teach you how to drive. However, they do provide you with information that, if applied, will help you improve your safe driving skills.

Please note: It will take 7 to 10 business days to process your Driver Safety Program completion results. This includes mailing time, grading time, transmitting time, and recording and processing time by the Driver Safety Program vendor and the BMV.

Classroom Instruction

The basic classroom Driver Safety Program provides four hours of classroom instruction using curriculum developed by the National Safety Council.

If you are ordered by a court to take a Driver Safety Program course, the court will provide you with information regarding how to enroll in a BMV-approved Driver Safety Program. The court's staff will also provide the date by which you must satisfactorily complete the court-ordered Driver Safety Program requirement. If you are required by the BMV to take a Driver Safety Program you will receive information in a notice advising you how to enroll in a Driver Safety Program.

The maximum cost for the classroom instruction Driver Safety Program is $50. Motorists who wish to take this course on a voluntary basis may contact National Safety Council.

Home Study - Video/DVD

The basic BMV-approved Driver Safety Program is now more convenient than ever! This four hour video series refreshes drivers' knowledge of the basic rules of the road for defensive driving techniques while offering new ideas on handling emergency situations.

The four hour videotape format allows participants to watch at their convenience. Participants are required to take the test provided with the video and return the materials to Blockbuster Take Home Defensive Driving. The test will be graded and the results reported to the BMV.

If you are ordered by a court to take a Driver Safety Program course, the court will provide you with information regarding how to enroll in a BMV-approved Driver Safety Program. The court's staff will also provide the date by which you must satisfactorily complete the court-ordered Driver Safety Program requirement. Home Study - Online

The basic BMV-approved Driver Safety Program is even more convenient than previously mentioned. This four-hour visual series refreshes drivers' knowledge of the basic rules of the road for defensive driving techniques while offering new ideas on handling emergency situations.

The four hour online format allows participants to watch at their convenience. Participants are required to take the test provided. The test will be graded and the results reported to the BMV.

PLEASE NOTE: You should allow 7-10 business days for the Driver Safety Program company to process your course completion results and report the results to the BMV. You have ninety days from the date of the notice to complete your Driver Safety Program requirement.

Completion of the course will not remove a violation from your record. However, you will receive a four point credit on your official Indiana Driver Record. This credit may only be applied once every three years.
