The Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) Program is a service that allows the BMV to verify the lawful status of credential applicants.
If you present documentation for proof of lawful status, the documentation will be verified through SAVE. All applicants with temporary or permanent lawful status are issued a SecureID credential.
If you present an acceptable document for proof of temporary lawful status and your lawful status can be verified through the SAVE program, a Restriction 9 will be placed on your credential and driver record.
In compliance with 49CFR 383.71 (b)(9) Indiana will not issue a new CLP or CDL to any driver that is not a US citizen or lawful permanent resident. To qualify as a lawful permanent resident, the applicant must provide a valid I-551.
Customers with temporary lawful status that currently hold a CDL may only be issued a base (operator, chauffeur or public passenger chauffeur) license.
You must present documentation to prove your identity when applying for a new credential. Multiple documents may be required if your name differs from your identity document (marriage, divorce, etc.).
If you are presenting a foreign passport, you will be required to provide I-94 arrival record and US VISA.
Lawful Status Documents
You must present documentation to prove your lawful status in the United States when applying for an Indiana credential.
If you are presenting a foreign passport, you will be required to provide additional documentation such as an I-94 arrival record, US Visa, DS-2019, I-20, etc.
Your lawful status document(s) will be verified through SAVE.
You will be required to present proof of lawful status with each application except replacement transactions .
It may take up to two weeks to verify lawful status documentation.
If your lawful status is verified, you will receive your credential within 14 days.
If your lawful status cannot be verified, the credential will not be issued and you will receive a denial letter. You may reapply with appropriate documentation.
