A BMV-approved Driver Safety Program (DSP) is available online. This four-hour online course refreshes drivers' knowledge of the basic rules of the road, defensive driving techniques and new ways to handle emergency situations. Participants are required to take the test provided. The test will be graded by the DSP provider and the results reported to the BMV.
If a court orders a driver to complete a DSP, the court may provide information about enrolling a BMV-approved DSP and provide the date by which the course must be satisfactorily completed. The court may order a driver to take a defensive driving course or driver safety program that is not approved by the BMV. In these cases, the driver will not receive a four (4) point credit on his/her driver record.
If the BMV requires a driver to complete a DSP for multiple violations in a 12-month period, the driver will be notified about enrolling in a BMV-approved DSP. A driver has ninety (90) days from the date of the BMV notice to complete the DSP.
After completing the DSP and submitting the results, it will take 7 to 10 business days to post the results on a driver’s record. This time includes mailing, grading, transmitting, and recording and processing by the DSP vendor and the BMV.
Completion of the course will not remove a violation from a driver record. A driver will receive a four point credit on his/her official Indiana Driver Record if the driver successfully completes a BMV-approved DSP. This credit may only be applied once every three years.
The maximum cost for this DSP is $55. Motorists who wish to take this course on a voluntary basis may contact the online vendors listed below. All drivers taking a DSP must pay any fees associated with the course.
