If you have moved from Indiana to another state you may apply to receive a refund of any remaining Indiana vehicle excise tax. To receive the refund, you should mail or fax the following documents to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles:

  • A photocopy of your vehicle's permanent registration from your new state.
    • North Carolina or Georgia residents must include both sides of their new state’s vehicle registration.
    • Maryland, Washington D.C., North Carolina, New Jersey, Utah, and Wisconsin residents must provide a copy of their new state’s vehicle registration receipt, instead of the permanent registration.
  • If the vehicle has been sold or traded, include a bill of sale or a dealership worksheet.
  • A photocopy of the Indiana Certificate of Registration, or your most recent Indiana plate number and former Indiana address.
  • Your return address.
  • If your name has changed, you must include the certified court decree issuing the change of name - such as a marriage certificate or divorce decree.

Mail or fax your documentation to the following address:

Ineligible vehicles

Watercraft are not eligible for refunds of any remaining Indiana excise tax. Trucks that are 16,000 pounds or heavier, and trailers that are 5,000 pounds or heavier, are not eligible for a refund because these vehicles are charged a commercial vehicle excise tax, which is distributed to the Indiana Department of Revenue.
