Identification Documents for a Driver's License or ID Card

Real ID-Compliant Driver’s License and ID Cards

A Real ID-compliant license, permit, or identification card adheres to the federal and state requirements for  state-issued identification

for official federal purposes, which are defined as:

  • Boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft (effective 10/1/2020)
  • Accessing federal facilities that require identification to enter, such as military bases
  • Entering nuclear power plants.

The more secure processing requirements associated with a Real ID provide greater protection in preventing fraud and identity theft. The BMV will only issue a REAL ID to new applicants, but recommends all Hoosiers upgrade as soon as it is practical to do so.

REAL ID Documents

When you apply for a new driver’s license, learner’s permit, or ID, you must present original versions or certified copies of proof of identity, Social Security number, lawful status and Indiana residency. The issuance of and information contained on these required documents will be verified with the source of the document.
