Indianapolis-The second edition of "A Report to Indiana's
Citizens on the State's Finances" has been issued by Auditor
of State Connie Nass. This edition focuses on the General Fund
and cash numbers for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2001.
"Like the first edition, this report is designed to provide
an enhanced understanding of the current fiscal condition of Indiana
State government," stated Auditor Nass. "Included in
this edition is an explanation of the distribution of funds generated
by gambling revenue."
The most significant conclusions of the report are: (1) State
government is virtually broke; (2) the surplus is dramatically
reduced from last year; (3) without the $101 million in reversions
from various state agencies, the state would have a negative cash
balance.
The "Report to Indiana Citizens on the State's Finances"
provides an enhanced understanding of the current State government
financial picture. The graphs and charts used to illustrate the
numbers provided in the report give citizens a new format by which
to access this information. Citizens may request a copy of the
report by calling the Auditor of State's office at (317) 232-3300
or visiting the Auditor of State's web site at www.in.gov/auditor/.
Connie Nass, a native of Huntingburg, Indiana, was elected Auditor
of State in 1998. Her office is responsible for keeping the State's
official financial records, paying the State's bills (including
the wages of 40,000 state employees), disbursing tax revenues
to cities, towns, counties and schools, creating and maintaining
the general ledger, and compiling and publishing the State's Comprehensive
Annual Financial Report (CAFR).
