Appeals Division
The Attorney General’s Appellate Division attorneys are called upon to represent the state in both civil and criminal appeals, as well as in other specialized areas. This means they work to uphold sentences—and keep criminals in jail.
Civil Appeals – Represents the state in cases involving constitutional issues, civil rights, consumer protection, government benefits, and employment matters, as well as business regulations and cases involving torts and claims against the state.
Criminal Appeals – Represents the state in criminal cases appealed to all levels of the judiciary and provides assistance to prosecuting attorneys throughout the state.
Habeas Corpus – Pursues the state’s interests when inmates file actions in Federal District Court alleging their convictions violate the U.S. Constitution.
Capital Post-Conviction – Represents the state when death row inmates return to trial courts to challenge convictions.
