Telephone Privacy Division

It is the duty of the attorney general and his staff to protect Hoosiers' rights as consumers. That includes residents' right to enjoy a peaceful evening—free from interruptions by unwanted telemarketers. To that end, the Telephone Privacy Division maintains, updates, and enforces Indiana's telephone privacy list. The attorney general's office also defends the list against attacks by groups that attempt to challenge it.

All Indiana residents can register their home phone numbers on the list that forbids most telemarketers from calling. The service is free and easy to use. Although many states have do-not-call lists, Indiana's is one of the most restrictive and effective.

What about unwanted faxes?

Unsolicited fax advertisements are prohibited under a state law passed by the Indiana General Assembly in 2006. The law authorizes the attorney general to recover civil penalties up to $1,500 per violation. Enforcement of the law begins January 1, 2007.

There is a federal law also prohibiting unsolicited fax advertisements.
