Having studied voice and violin in her youth, South Bend arts patron June H. Edwards returned to the music world in 1956 as a member of the South Bend Symphony Orchestra Guild, as it was then known. She served in several offices of the board, including three terms as president.
Mrs. Edwards' impact on the arts is also seen in the art wing at the South Bend Museum of Art that bears her name. Her love for chamber music is also reflected in the South Bend Symphony Chamber Music series which also bears her name.
A 1995 recipient of the South Bend Mayor's Art Award, June Edwards was nominated as Woman of the Year in Volunteerism in the Arts. She is presently a member of the Arts Foundation Board at Indiana University South Bend, serving as Vice-President.
"I was so surprised and happy when I received word about my receiving an award," Mrs. Edwards said. "My years of supporting the arts have been pleasurable and satisfying. I will continue to work in the arts arena for many years."
Mrs. Edwards and five additional recipients of the 2011 Governor's Arts Awards will be honored during an awards ceremony and dinner Thursday, April 26, 2012 at the Ernestine M. Raclin School for the Arts on the campus of Indiana University South Bend.
