Past Individual Artist Grant Recipients

The Individual Artist Program Grant supports individual artists for specific project-related costs. Eligible projects are purposely left flexible to respond to artists' ideas, dreams, and needs; however, the goal of this program is to aid the artists' career development.

For the purchase of an archival digital printer and supplies needed for printing multiple copies of a series of 12” x 18” computer generated 3-D images.

To assist the artist with childcare expenses required for the artist to complete a collection of interrelated short stories.

To purchase a digital camera and digital camcorder needed to develop a multi-media presentation CD documenting and promoting the artist’s mixed media installations.

To support the purchase of gas burners to complete an outdoor gas kiln, allowing the artist to create large-scale high fire figurative pieces.

To assist the artist with travel and other expenses related to attending the International Quilt Market in Houston, Texas and promotion of the artist’s work.

Scott Anderson, Hartford City
The 2007 Individual Artist grant funded Scott's painting supplies as well as travel to museums to conduct research. He plans to develop new imagery and surface applications and a more collective abstract language.

Becky Archibald, Indianapolis, 2004, 2006
2004: To defray the costs of the artist's marketing and media tools for her upcoming original piano compositions concerts. Ms. Archibald's first CD, Searching, was a set of 10 original piano pieces.
2006: To assist the artist with costs related to staging a recital at Carnegie Hall in New York City including reserving the venue, promotion, and distribution of marketing materials.

Anthony Artis, Indianapolis, 2003
To support the creation of drum shells, the purchase of wood carving tools, and costs to study with Felix Eboigbe, a Nigerian wood sculptor in order to acquire the skills of wood sculpture design and execution and apply those skills to the folk art of African drummaking by adding designs to the drum shells.

Iveta Asons, Fishers, 2005, 2007
2005: To help with the purchase of three types of Lithuanian lap-zither, called "kankle" for the artist to use with the Indianapolis Baltic Folk Music Ensemble.
2007: The grant allowed Asons to preserve traditional Latvian-American music. She purchased equipment to enhance the audio for use in live performances, including the 2007 U.S. Latvian Song and Dance Festival, held in Indianapolis.

Travel and material costs for a series entitled, "Stitching and Sewing Things That Grow.

William Baer, Evansville, 2007
The grant funded three weeks of uninterrupted translating. William has translated the modern Brazilian sonnets of Vinícius de Moraes, who wrote The Girl from Ipanema.

Ruth Baker, Fort Wayne, 2006
For costs related to producing a staged reading of the drama Rapture, including pre-rehearsal conference; selecting audition, rehearsal, performance space; and post-production conference with the director.

Karen Baldner, Bloomington, 2005, 2007
2005: To attend verbal dialogue meetings, pay for material costs, and a technical consultant for a project entitled Reconciliation Dialogue.
2007: A grant facilitated a workshop for children at Baldner's studio and the documentation the event in a short movie, which aired on local television.

To professionally film and produce a video/DVD of a one-woman drama the artist has been performing for the past year.

Steve Beai, Farmersburg, 2004
To assist with travel and supplies relating to the completion and solicitation for a publisher of a novel called, "The Monk."

James Bednarski, Fishers, 2005
To attend a two-week internship with Michael Fortune at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking (MASW) in Franklin, Indiana.

James Beckel, Indianapolis, 2003, 2007
2003: To support the creation and recording of a work for solo horn, solo percussion, and synthesized tape.
2007: The Individual Artist grant funded composer James Beckel for the preparation of a new orchestral work, Toccata for Orchestra, played by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in 2007. This support included marketing the work for future performances.

Rosalie Becker, Fort Wayne, 2007
Rosalie is a classical soprano who has recorded Yiddish Art songs. The grant was to finish editing, and prepare a multi-lingual booklet and a CD for distribution.

Grace Benedict, Lafayette, 2005
To create fully developed drawings and works on paper based on studies from life and photographs of views of monuments and statuary from several historic and architectural sites in Indiana.

Zackery Bent, Muncie, 2005
To support the creation and exhibition of 15-20 digital photographic art montages with the purchase of a Minolta 35mm digital camera.

Edward Bernstein, Bloomington, 2005
To help with the expenses of two solo exhibitions of the artist's work at Anchor Graphics, Chicago in October 2004 and the School of Fine Arts Gallery, Indiana University, Bloomington in January 2005.

Cynthia Blasingham, Indianapolis, 2003, 2006
2003: To support costs associated with creating a suite of etchings based on the flora and fauna of the endangered wetlands of Indiana and to exhibit a framed traveling show of these pieces in several facilities related to natural resources and education.
2006: For the creation of a series of hand-pulled, non-toxic intaglio prints based on the flora and fauna of newly constructed and reclaimed wetlands within urban areas of Indiana.

Janet Bloch, Chesterton, 2007
Janet created a series of paintings of the Northwest Indiana landscape. She used the grant to fund the custom built wood panels and to document the paintings on slides and CD to submit for exhibitions.

Pianist Craig used his grant to study under two preeminent boogie woogie and blues piano players, Bob Seeley and Big Joe Duskin. He also joined them in performance at a festival in Bloomington.

Dayle used the grant to research, write and illustrate her next book from series Skylore from Planet Earth. Dayle has been a planetarium education specialist for 20 years, and this book will teach children about the Milky Way.

To allow the artist to research perform and market, "Songs and stories of the Great Lakes."

To support costs associated with finishing the novel 'Strange Fruit,' including the purchase of supplies, a research trip to Madison, Ind., membership costs for two writers' organizations, and attending the World Horror Conference.

2007: What artist doesn't need a belt grinder? Bernie is an accomplished iron caster who developed the technique of using hardware, rather than welding, to join segments of sculpture. The IAC funded a belt grinder for him to perfect this process.

Alice Carver-Kubik, Lafayette, 2007
The grant funded a video camera for Alice's contemporary art project. She created a series of videos that confront relationships between social minorities and our mainstream visual culture.

The grant sent Jacqueline to an outdoor watercolor workshop in Maine to study under Fredrick Graff. She enhanced her traditional techniques with impressionistic influence and landscapes beyond her native Indiana.

2005: To go on a research trip to Barra and Mingulay for a novel about two sisters who are separated during highland clearances in Scotland.

To increase the level of public knowledge of the art of egg carving by developing an egg carving demonstration program for children, a color brochure and to purchase an air compressor, a high speed carving tool and eggshells.

2007: As a jewelry artist, Lydia used the grant to study under master enamelist Linda Darty at the Touchstone Center for Crafts. She made a new series of work with the techniques.

To complete 2-3 outside murals in downtown New Albany, IN by purchasing paint, brushes, rollers and other supplies for involved artists.

Eugene Gloria, Greencastle, 2007
Eugene's manuscript focuses on the dual theme of diaspora and cultural identity which required travel for research. The IAC funded part of his travel, encouraging him to take risks with his writing.

Jill Godmilow, South Bend, 2007
Jill received funding from the IAC to make the final cut of her short film The Student and the Colonel. The film is a melodramatic parable of animal activism told in a whimsical style.

Linda Goodine, Indianapolis, 2003
To support costs associated with using photography to record the America beef farmer's relationship to shifting evaluation criteria wrought by technological advances in genetic science.

Brooke Grace, Evansville, 2007
The grant funded the framing and matting of Brooke's solo photography exhibit at Synchronicity Gallery in Evansville, Indiana. The series was self-portraits taken in local abandoned spaces.

Timothy Gray, Carmel, 2004, 2006
2004: Use of materials for an art installation in an existing historic barn, marketing, and publicity.
2006: To assist the artist with costs related to creating a monograph of work documenting both art and architecture projects.

Marie Greenlee, Indianapolis, 2007
Dance Kaleidoscope dancer Mariel received grant to study at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance.

Kay Grimm, Indianapolis, 2005
To capture in book form the stories of those who live, work and play on the Massachusetts Ave of downtown Indianapolis told using their own words, their images and the found objects which together inspired the artist's "installation" art.

Elizabeth Guipe Hall, Indianapolis, 2007
Elizabeth uses an ancient method of painting with wax called encaustic painting and combines it with modern and digital techniques and materials. The grant allowed her to attend an encaustic workshop and complete two series of this unique artform.

Cheryl Hanley, Monroeville, 2003
To support the study and research of the development of glazes that grow crystals, including the purchase of supplies, study with a Master Crystallier, the creation of vessels and platters or tiles, and project documentation to support the final written research report.

Hannah Haas, Bloomington, 2003
To support costs associated with writing a young adult novel, including visiting English classes at various middle and high schools in order to solicit student reaction, and purchasing reference books in order to research potential agents and submit queries.

Kathleen Hacker, Camby, 2005
To present a two concert series of the works of Joseph Marx to be presented at the National Association of Teachers of Singing National Convention in New Orleans in 2004 and also at the Christel DeHann Fine Arts Center in November 2004, with possibilities of presenting at campuses throughout Indiana.

Purchase of the materials needed to create 5 outdoor sculptures based on the symbolism of Stupas and the costs to photograph the completed work.

Michael Hall, Indianapolis, 2005
To create a series of five abstract limestone sculptures approximately four feet high by purchasing carving tools, sandpaper, Indiana limestone, heating for the artist's studio, photocopying services and postage, and to support the artist's time to create the sculptures.

To provide a stipend and travel assistance during the summer allowing the artist to work on a documentary, in writing, of the people and places in Wayne County, IN.

Kelly Harrington, South Bend, 2007
Everyone needs a spot of their own. The IAC has granted funding for materials for Kelly to convert her garage into a painting studio, increasing her productivity.

Greg Harris, Tell City, 2007
The grant helped fund a power drill and site preparation for Greg's public sculpture. It will stand at the entrance of Eagle's Bluff park in Perry, Indiana.

Jack Hartigan, Indianapolis, 2006
For the purchase of photographic printing materials and supplies required for a one month residency at the Vermont Studio Center.

Nasrin Hekmat-Farrokh, Bloomington, 2004
To assist the artist in traveling to Tehran to do research on classical Persian poetic images. This research will assist the artist in her rewrite of "The Dawn of Peace."

Jessica Held, West Layfayette, 2007
Jessica discovered new painting techniques and has expanded her portfolio and used the grant to buy a digital camera to document her new works.

Abner Hershberger, Goshen, 2005
To develop a brochure for the artist's work, titled "Field Notes: The Art of Abner Hershberger" to accompany an upcoming art exhibit in Spring 2005 at the Midwest Museum of American Art (MMAA) in Elkhart, Indiana.

Monika Herzig, Bloomington, 2004, 2007
2004: To allow the artist the opportunity to write, produce, and market a 45-minute humorous, educational video for the purpose of introducing basic elements of jazz to young children through an entertaining and interactive setting.
2007: The grant allowed this jazz musician to document her repertoire in a traditional jazz trio. She produced a CD and performed live release concerts to promote her work.

To assist the artist costs in composing two 3 to 4 minute works for a string quintet specifically conceived for K-6th graders.

Loran Hill, Indianapolis, 2004
To assist with costs relating to building a 54 cubic foot catenary arch kiln.

As Artistic Director of Dance Kaleidoscope, David needs to be in tune with the dance world at large. The grant helped fund his trip to NYC where he took classes and attend performances.
