knights of the round tableA well functioning board is as critical to the success of the nonprofit organization. Organizations need to be mindful of governance best practices and view board development as long-term investment in the future of the organization.

The board of directors of a nonprofit organization fulfills the organization's pledge of service to its community and ensures compliance with appropriate federal, state, and local laws and regulations. In other words, the board of directors' role is to ensure the community's trust in the organization.

Board Support Resources

Key elements of an effective board are quality board orientation and training and a comprehensive board manual. There is a myriad of literature and resources on boards and board-staff relations. Here are few of the best:

  • You can sign up for Board Cafe, the monthly on-line newsletter about boards and governance published by Compasspoint. You can also access Planet 501, a cartoon that takes humorous look at nonprofit issues. [ more ]
  • Compasspoint has created a national partnership to assist organizations in finding board members. [ more ]
  • Charlitable Advisors LLC is an Indianapolis Strategic Planning and Operational Assessment Company. Subscribe to their weekly Indpls Not-for-Profit News and learn about local news and opportunities.
  • The Wisconsin Assembly of Local Arts Agencies handbook for nonprofit arts organizations is a wonderful resource for nonprofit governance, including sample job descriptions, committee charges, code of ethics, and standards of conduct.
  • The Minnesota Council on Nonprofits has a number of tools for board development. [ more ]
