Stanley Schoolhouse at Chain O’Lakes SP earns national historic recognition
Start Date: 8/26/2015
Event Description:
The Stanley Schoolhouse at Chain O’Lakes State Park has earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places for its significance in education history and for its architecture.

The brick schoolhouse was built in 1915 near Albion in Noble County and closed in the 1950s.

Chain O’Lakes State Park opened in 1960, and since then the schoolhouse has served several purposes, including as a nature center. In 2012, the schoolhouse was restored to interpret the history of early education.

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation's historic places worthy of preservation.

Ben Clark, chief of cultural resources for Indiana State Parks, and Sam Boggs, Chain O’Lakes property manager, described the designation as an honor.

“We have always known what a valuable resource this building is,” Clark said. “Now that it is listed on the National Register we are able to raise the profile of the Stanley Schoolhouse so that more people can learn about its history and come see the school for themselves.”

Stanley Schoolhouse is the fourth school building on the site. The school reflects the architectural standards of its time, in its brick construction and T-shaped floor plan. The T-plan allowed for boys’ and girls’ cloak and lunch pail closets to be placed outside the classroom. Also, the resulting wide, shallow classroom allowed more students to be closer to the teacher.

Chain O’Lakes State Park ( is at 2355 E. 75 South, Albion, 46701.
