Celebrate Archaeology Month with this lecture on Stars of the First People: Native American Legends of Stars, Constellations, the Creation and the Sky.

Join Dr. Ron Weiss, Assistant Professor of Biology at Marian University, for a fascinating tour of the night sky as seen through the eyes of the first people of the Americas. Native American legends not only entertain, but also play an important role in the passing on of knowledge. Stories about the Milky Way, the Sun, Venus, Mars, the North Star, Oral traditions also told of the path of deceased spirits take to their final dwelling place in the Spirit Star. Other stories relating to the sky include the Great Bear, the Man with the Broken Leg, the Pleiades, Canopus, the Council of Chiefs, and many others. There were many tribes across North America, and the stories and legends of the First People varied across the many tribes that inhabited North America.

The evening will begin with a PowerPoint presentation showing the constellations and stars visible in the fall sky, followed, weather permitting, with an outdoor program with a research grade telescope to view some of the outstanding objects visible that night.
