Guided Hike at Chamberlain Lake, St. Joseph County
Start Date: 8/5/2017Start Time: 10:00 AM
End Date: 8/5/2017End Time: 12:00 PM
Event Description:
Chamberlain Lake, "a rare opportunity for an up close look at one of Indiana's most unique wetlands"

A special hike celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Division of Nature Preserves!

This very unusual wetland type consists of a floating sedge mat chock-full of some of Indiana's rarest plants, many of which would be more expected on the Atlantic Coastal Plain. This is a rare chance to explore the lake's floating mat (like walking on a water bed!) to search for tiny insectivorous sundews and purple bladderworts, a variety of sedges, and delicate pipeworts with their grayish, cottony, button-like flowers. Under the pipewort account (Eriocaulon) in their classic 1994 Plants of the Chicago Region, Swink and Wilhelm refer to Chamberlain Lake as "unique to the planet", but make the dire prediction that it "appears doomed to development". Fortunately, Chamberlain Lake was saved from destruction and today is protected as a dedicated state nature preserve for you to enjoy.

Note:  Hike is approximately 2.0 miles through woodland and around the wetland, rubber boots highly suggested

Directions: Directions to Lentz Landing, a Public Access site: From the small community of Lydick at Edison and Quince roads junction (west of South Bend), travel north on Quince Road for ½ mile to Southport Drive.  Right on Southport Drive for approximately 0.3 mile to Lentz Landing Public Access site on North Chain Lake.  We will meet at Lentz Landing to carpool to Chamberlain Lake.

  • At least knee high boots are recommended.
