Myaamia (Miami Indian) Traditional Plant Knowledge, Chain O'Lakes State Park

Event Description:
Noon. Myaami Traditional Plant Knowledge.  Learn about traditional Miami Native American culture as visitors and Miami tribal members make cattail Mays's, the traditional coverings for Miami homes. Join us at the historic Stanley Schoolhouse for this interactive program.

2 pm. Myaami Traditional Plant Knowledge.  (See description above, same program repeated)

3 pm. Myaami Beaver Roast.  We will roast a beaver throughout the day, over an open fire. Be prepared to taste beaver and wild rice!  Join us at the historic Stanley Schoolhouse for this interactive program.
Park visitors are invited to learn with Miami Tribal member and Plant Tradition Bearer, Dani Tippmann, about Miami traditional plant usage.  In this last program visitors will be able to assist Myaamia (Miami Indian) tribal members strip cattail leaves in preparation for making a mat. The dried cattail leaves will be strung and sewn into a cattail mat, which were used to construct Myaamia homes. Instruction on Myaamia traditions and lifeways will continue throughout the mat making. We will roast a beaver throughout the day, over an open fire. Visitors will be able to taste beaver, wild rice & other traditional Myaamia foods.  

All programs will be held outside at the historic Stanley Schoolhouse.  Please dress appropriately.
