Public Archaeology Program, Versailles State Park
Start Date: 8/14/2018Start Time: 1:00 PM
End Date: 8/14/2018End Time: 4:00 PM
Event Description:

Join us Tuesday, August 14th from 1-4pm at Versailles State Park for a fun and educational archaeology program.  Ball State University is conducting archaeological surveys in order to uncover what remains of 19th century daily home life, and you're invited to participate.

The home sites and historical records tell the story of a planned settlement in the early days of Indiana’s statehood from 1818 until the park was turned over to the Indiana Department of Conservation in 1943. Versailles is significant because it was among the first planned towns in early Indiana. These historic home sites are well preserved and are therefore a veritable treasure trove of information on daily life in early Indiana.

This project has been funded in part by a grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Fund administered by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology.

Join the Versailles State Park staff, Ball State University archaeology professors and field study students, DHPA staff, and volunteers at the Oak Grove Shelter area to learn about the history of this area before it became a state park. Visitors will be given short tours of the archaeological site, which includes test digs and survey sites, by BSU staff.  Additionally, the park staff and DHPA will have informational and educational activities going on during the afternoon. These include artifact displays, artifact identification, hands-on activities, and more.

At 2pm, local resident and historian, Bill Dallman, will give a talk about the history of the land and the families who lived here.

This program is free and open to the public after paying the park’s entrance fee.
