Grissom Day, Spring Mill State Park

Event Description:
Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom was the second American in space and the first to go there twice! He was born and raised in Mitchell, so we spend the day celebrating the life and accomplishments of this American hero.

8am-4pm: Outreach to Space- Swing by the Grissom Memorial for some hands-on, interactive displays from the Evansville Museum! Have you ever wondered how much an apple weighs on different planets? Find out!
10am-3pm: Space Crafts- Stop by the craft table at the Grissom Memorial to enjoy one or all of our several crafts that will be put out throughout the day.
10am-5pm: Watch a documentary on Gus in the Lakeview Activity Center.
11am-12pm: Cosmic Cuisine- How do you feed a crew of astronauts on a space journey? Stop by the Grissom Memorial to try a few space food items!
2pm: Guest Speaker: Steve Grissom- Steve is speaking about manned space flight and Gus's role in the space program.
3-4pm: Grissom Artifacts- Get a more intimate look into our hometown hero's life by seeing artifacts that aren't normally on display! Grissom Memorial.
5-6pm: Bottle Rockets- Stop by the Grissom Memorial Office parking lot to see how high you can make a water bottle rocket fly! Be ready to get wet!
9:30pm: "Star Party" with the Stonebelt Stargazers- A local astronomy group will be bringing their telescopes and expertise for a night of stargazing. Pool parking lot.
