Arts in the Park: Fire & Trees with Erik Vosteen, Chain O'Lakes State Park

Event Description:

From creating prairies and building dugout canoes to keeping warm and cooking food, fire is arguably the single most important human technology, and no people anywhere have been known to exist without it.  Trees are one of the most majestic and important members of the natural world.  Bring a lawn chair or blanket for this family friendly event outside the historical Stanley Schoolhouse as we learn from Erik about Fire & Tree Resources.

  • June 6, 2 pm Everything Fire
  • June 12, 2 pm Tree Resources of Chain O'Lakes
  • July 10, 2 pm Cooking in Clay Pots made with Local Clays.  Did you know that clay in the Chain O' Lakes region can be used to make pottery that will boil, bake, roast, and even fry food? Join Erik Vosteen outside the historic Stanley Schoolhouse as he demonstrates using clay pots made from local clays to cook up some food! We will be putting the pottery right on an open fire to make some yummy snacks! (1 hour)
  • July 11, 2 pm  Everything Fire- Arts in the Park with Erik. From creating prairies and building dugout canoes to keeping warm and cooking food, fire is arguably the single most important human technology, and no people anywhere have been known to exist without it. Erik Vosteen will show you how the park’s resources have been and can still be used to create fire, and how ancient people used fire to shape the landscape and manipulate the ecosystems of the Chain O’ Lakes region.  Bring a lawn chair or blanket for this family friendly event outside at historic Stanley Schoolhouse.  (1 hour)
  • July 24, 2 pm Tree Resources of Chain O’Lakes- Arts in the Park with Erik. Trees are one of the most majestic and important members of the natural world. For ancient people they were at the core of everyday life, providing food, fuel, home building materials, fiber, glues, boats, basket making supplies, and much more. Erik Vosteen is an expert on historic tree resources and will take you on an adventure hike through the woods to not just identify trees, but to learn about the unique and often surprising resources that specific species provide. The woodlands and hills in the park are particularly beautiful during the month of July, and you do not want to miss this chance to learn long forgotten uses of the forest giants.  Bring a lawn chair or blanket for this family friendly event outside the historic Stanley Schoolhouse. (1 hour)
  • July 25, 11 am Making and Using Tools from Local Stone with Erik. You might be surprised to learn how many different types of functional tools can be made from the rocks found in the Chain O'Lakes region! Erik will bring finished tools, and some raw materials to show how various tools like knives, axes, drills, hammers, and specialty woodworking tools can be made with simple techniques. Come try your hand at using a few of these unique and effective stone tools. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for this family friendly event outside the historic Stanley Schoolhouse (1 hour)
