Tefft Savanna - Sunset on the Savanna - Guided hike, Jasper County
Start Date: 7/25/2018Start Time: 6:00 PM
End Date: 7/25/2018End Time: 8:00 PM
Event Description:

THIS HIKE IS FULL. REGISTRATION HAS BEEN CLOSED.

Meet at 6:00 PM Chicago time at the headquarters of Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area.  Restrooms are available.  From there we will carpool to the site.  The area may be wet so be prepared for wet walking conditions.  We will look at some of the flora of the rare coastal plain ponds that occur in the preserve by hiking off trail

This nature preserve is a 480 acre portion of the larger Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area. This site protects excellent examples of the land forms and plant communities that were characteristic of the area at the time of settlement.

Areas of fine quartz sand cover extensive portions of several counties south of the Kankakee River. The sand originated from Wisconsinan-age glacial moraines located to the north and east of the area, and was carried into the Kankakee River basin by outwash channels emanating from the melting ice sheet. Over time, prevailing westerly winds dispersed the sand over a wide area beyond the river basin. Some of these wind-blown deposits exist today as flat sand plains, whereas others, like much of that in the nature preserve are rolling dunes and depressions.
