UPDATE: Brown County SP open for some free day use activities and services only on Monday, June 24
Start Date: 6/22/2019 All Day
Event Description:

UPDATE: Brown County SP open for some free day use activities and services only on Monday, June 24

At Brown County State Park, the campgrounds, cabins and Abe Martin Lodge will remain closed through at least Monday, June 24. Campers and lodge guests with reservations have been contacted directly.

The park will reopen for some day use activities and services ONLY on Monday, June 24. This includes such activities as sight-seeing, fishing and picnicking. Abe Martin Lodge remains closed, and the pools, all modern restrooms, and drinking fountains will remain closed. Guests who visit for permitted activities must bring their own drinking water. Vault toilets are available in multiple locations in the park. Gates will be staffed, but no admission will be charged.

The nature center and park office will be open, but restrooms in those buildings will be closed. Some hiking trails will be open, but mountain bike trails and horse trails will remain closed as crews continue to evaluate them for the impact of torrential rain and high winds.

Park staff continue to work closely with DNR’s Division of Engineering, consultants and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) to ensure that when the park fully reopens there is safe drinking water and water for all needed uses across the property.

Although the sediment level in Ogle Lake from heavy rainfall over the last week still remains high, a large portable treatment tank has been connected and is pre-filtering sediment from the water before it enters the park’s treatment facility. As this process continues and the park’s 100,000 gallon water storage tank refills, all lines must be charged and flushed. The park must submit two separate water samples for testing to an accredited lab. Both samples, drawn at least 24 hours apart, must meet required drinking water standards before overnight facilities, drinking water fountains, the restaurant and other facilities can reopen.

Closure of overnight facilities beyond Monday night will be evaluated as we watch lake conditions and rainfall, and as we receive water test results.

UPDATE: Brown County SP activities relocated to Brown County Visitor Center as state park remains closed

Brown County Nature Center

Brown County State Park and Abe Martin Lodge remain closed through at least Sunday, June 23.

Several free programs scheduled by the park’s interpretive services have been relocated to the Brown County Visitor Center at 211 S. Van Buren Street in Nashville, IN, including Indiana reptiles on display on Friday and Saturday, an Arts in the Parks sketching program and a live raptor program on Saturday. See the full schedule of activities and program times at http://bit.ly/2Y2jk2j.

The sediment level from last weekend’s heavy rainfall still remains too high in Ogle Lake to allow the production of potable water. State Parks staff members have provided cancellation notices to guests with reservations for the campgrounds and for Abe Martin Lodge through Sunday evening.

Park staff continue to work with DNR’s Division of Engineering, consultants and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) to ensure that when the park reopens there is safe drinking water and water for all needed uses across the property.

Closure beyond the weekend will be evaluated as we watch lake conditions and rainfall.

UPDATE: Brown County SP closed through the weekend

Brown County State Park and Abe Martin Lodge will be closed through Sunday, June 23. The sediment level from last weekend’s heavy rainfall still remains too high in Ogle Lake to allow the production of potable water. State Parks staff members are providing cancellation notices to guests with reservations for the campgrounds and for Abe Martin Lodge through Sunday evening. Closure beyond the weekend will be evaluated as we watch lake conditions and rainfall.

Park staff continue to work with DNR’s Division of Engineering, consultants and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) to ensure that when the park reopens there is safe drinking water and water for all needed uses across the property.

Brown County State Park has 612 campsites between the modern campground and the horsemen’s campground. Scheduled occupancy for the weekend was at approximately 41%. Campers with reservations are being offered the opportunity to move their reservations to any other DNR campgrounds that have availability, like nearby Monroe Lake and McCormick’s Creek State Park. Refunds are available for those who do not want to relocate to another property.

Abe Martin Lodge has 172 rooms and cabins, and scheduled occupancy was at 100% for this weekend. Guests at Abe Martin Lodge are being offered rooms at other state park inns where availability exists; refunds or rescheduling are options as well. Inn staff are also working closely with group functions planned at the lodge, and most have been rescheduled to other state park inns.

Staff continue to handle routine upkeep and maintenance throughout the park and inn in addition to ongoing work on the water system.

The park staff received a supply of drinking water from the Civilian Crisis Response Team today, and greatly appreciates the thoughtful donation.

UPDATE: Brown County SP closed through Thursday June 20

Brown County State Park and Abe Martin Lodge will be closed through Thursday June 20. There is still too much sediment from last weekend’s heavy rainfall coming into the system to allow the production of potable water. State Parks staff members are contacting guests with reservations through Thursday evening in the campground and at the Abe Martin Lodge with cancellation notices. With additional heavy rainfall predicted, closure beyond Thursday is still a day by day decision.

Staff members are working in partnership with DNR’s Division of Engineering, consultants and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) to ensure that when the park reopens there is safe drinking water and water for all needed uses across the park.

Brown County SP closed due to water issues

Brown County State Park and Abe Martin Lodge closed to the public at about 4 p.m. today due to a lack of usable water supply caused by the heavy rainfall over the last several days.

The park will remain closed to the public tomorrow. The decision about closure beyond tomorrow is day-to-day.

The park’s water source is Ogle Lake, which is within park boundaries. Water is drawn from the lake and is treated through the park’s in-house facility.

The significantly larger-than-normal quantities of water coming into the lake has brought soil with it, increasing the water’s turbidity. The high turbidity prevents the system from reducing it for treatment quickly enough at the intake site. This has resulted in an insufficient quantity of water to supply park facilities.

The DNR Engineering staff and consultants who designed the system are on site working on the issue.

All campers who were in the park, about 50, are being notified, and the 16 campers who were scheduled to come in tonight as well as those scheduled for tomorrow night have been notified.

Abe Martin, the state park’s inn, was at about 50 percent occupancy. All guests are going home, and guests expected today were contacted and alerted.

Updates will be posted at stateparks.IN.gov/7881.htm and on social media. If additional camper or inn guest cancellations are required, those guests will be notified directly by park staff or through the central reservation system.

Brown County State Park (on.IN.gov/browncountysp) is at 1450 S.R. 46 E in Nashville, 47448.
