Pine Station Nature Preserve Guided Hike, Lake County
Start Date: 9/14/2019Start Time: 10:00 AM
End Date: 9/14/2019End Time: 12:00 PM
Event Description:

The Division of Nature Preserves is teaming up with some of our partner organizations and land trusts to hold a series of hikes on nature preserves.  The partner for this hike is INPAWS - Indiana Native Plant and Wildflower Society - North Chapter.  Hike leader will be Emily Stork, Grand Calumet regional ecologist.

This property contains remnants of the very rare 'ridge and swale' topography that formed as glacial Lake Chicago receded thousands of years ago.  Sandy beach ridges are paralleled by long, narrow ponds and marshes.  Due to the close proximity of Lake Michigan, the water in the swales is alkaline, supporting a number of plants rarely found elsewhere in Indiana.  The overall vegetation is a mix of elements from the west, north, and east.   Prior to DNR ownership, the property was subject to surface sand mining which removed many of the former ridges, but left in their place, sand scrapes which support panne-like sedge meadow communities.  Twenty-four rare plants and a dozen rare animals are found here, including blue hearts, paper birch, bearberry, a number of orchids, glass lizard and cricket frogs.  Significant restoration efforts are underway to tackle invasive plant populations that formerly dominated much of the preserve.

Directions:  Pine Station Nature Preserve is in Gary, Indiana, northeast of the Gary/Chicago International Airport, on North Clark Road.  Exact driving directions will be sent at a later date.
