[DNR] Guided Hike at Seidner Dune and Swale Nature Preserve, Lake County
Start Date: 9/27/2014Start Time: 10:00 AM
End Date: 9/27/2014End Time: 12:00 PM
Event Description:
Time: 10 a.m. CDT (local time)
Cost: Free
Location: Seidner Dune and Swale Nature Preserve, Lake County
Meeting Location: Parking area on dirt road.
Directions: From I-80/94 or US 20, take Kennedy Ave. north, just past the Indiana Toll Road (I-90) overpass. Turn right (east) onto the first (unnamed) road, which leads to the back entrance of the RESCO plant. Park at the bend in the road and access the preserve via the dirt road that leads east, parallel to the Toll Road. There is no developed trail system, but an informal hiking trail exists along the frontage road and former railway rights of way, which lies between the Toll Road and the river.

The Division of Nature Preserves is teaming up with some of our partner organizations and land trusts to hold a series of hikes on nature preserves. The partner for this hike is Shirley Heinze Land Trust. Register for the hike using the registration icon at the top right.

Description: This State Dedicated 43-acre preserve features “dune and swale” topography, with the associated wetlands and oak savanna, and a floodplain marsh along the Grand Calumet River. Over 250 species of plants have been identified on the site, including several rare species that have strict habitat requirements. Notable plants include wild lupine, harebell, fringed gentian, blue-flag iris, white wild indigo, side-oats grama grass, prairie lily, blazing star and many others. The site is managed by SHLT to maintain biological diversity and to preserve the fire dependent communities that occur here.
  • Wear appropriate clothing and footwear, bring water, sunscreen, and bug spray.
  • Bring binoculars and a hand lens, if you have them.
