Spring Mill State Park Opens Reconstructed Red Cross Cabin with Dedication and Activities
Start Date: 5/5/2018Start Time: 1:00 PM
End Date: 5/5/2018End Time: 4:00 PM
Event Description:

Learn about Red Cross’s unique connection to Lawrence County as Spring Mill State Park dedicates its historic Red Cross Cabin, May 5.

The dedication starts at 1 p.m. EDT. The cabin is uphill from the Lakeview Activity Center parking lot where Pine Hills Shelter is currently located.

Following the dedication, re-enactors will portray Red Cross founder Clara Barton and Bedford residents Joseph and Enola Gardner, who were Red Cross volunteers and friends of Barton. Staff and volunteers from the Southern Indiana District of the American Red Cross will be on hand with artifacts and "then and now" activities related to Red Cross volunteer activities.

Refreshments will be provided by Spring Mill Inn and by the American Red Cross.

In 1893, the Gardners gave Barton a 782-acre farm south of Bedford. The gift became known as the Red Cross Farm.

The Gardners hoped the property would become a storehouse for Red Cross supplies. Barton frequently came to the farm to rest, but financial support to fund the Gardner’s plans never arrived.

In 1904 the Gardners’ farmhouse on the property burned. They built a new log cabin, using some material from the old house and other property structures. Over time, the log cabin was home to a local judge, it was a restaurant and it was purchased by the Shriners. It was eventually moved to the school grounds at Bedford North Lawrence High School and then to Spring Mill State Park for reconstruction.

Funding to restore the cabin at Spring Mill State Park was provided by the Hoosier Uplands Economic Development Corporation. The talented staff at the park completed the restoration work.

Funding for interior exhibit panels that tell the story of Clara Barton, the American Red Cross and cabin was provided by Lawrence County Tourism.

The dedication and events are supported by Spring Mill State Park and Spring Mill Inn staff, the Friends of Spring Mill State Park and Red Cross volunteers and staff.

This event is also a part of Lawrence County’s Bicentennial Celebration.

The cabin will be rentable this summer following paving of the access road. It will provide an enclosed facility for family reunions and picnics, weddings and receptions. The cost is $75/day plus taxes and fees except on holiday weekends, when it is $80/day plus taxes and fees. Reservations can be made online at www.camp.IN.gov or by calling 866-622-6746.
