Guided Hike at Clark and Pine and Pine Station Nature Preserves, Lake County
Start Date: 5/20/2017Start Time: 9:30 AM
End Date: 5/20/2017End Time: 12:00 PM
Event Description:
Clark and Pine Nature Preserve, "Beach ridge and swale topography, one of Indiana's rarest habitat types"
Pine Station Nature Preserve, "A great example of dune and swale habitat"

This special hike celebrates Division of Nature Preserves 50th anniversary!

There are no developed trails and hikers should be prepared to traverse uneven terrain through native vegetation. Long pants are recommended and the ability to step over a wire fence will be necessary.

This tract is a remnant of the very rare 'ridge and swale' topography that formed as glacial Lake Chicago receded thousands of years ago. Sandy beach ridges are paralleled by long, narrow ponds and marshes. Due to the close proximity of Lake Michigan, the water in the swales is alkaline, supporting a number of plants rarely found elsewhere in Indiana. The overall vegetation is a mix of elements from the west, north, and east. Fifty state ranked plants and a number of rare animals are found here, including blue hearts, paper birch, bearberry, a number of orchids, glass lizard and Franklin's ground squirrel.

Pine Station NP contains approximately 47 acres of relatively undisturbed dune and swale habitat which supports remnant examples of many natural community types, including sand savanna, sand prairie, wet prairie, sedge meadow, emergent marsh, and shrub swamp. The majority of the property has suffered to varying extents from past disturbances. Since the acquisition of the property by DNR, restoration efforts have removed debris, cleared many acres of invasive shrubs and trees, surveyed plants and animals, implemented prescribed burns, and controlled invasive herbaceous plant species. Despite the prior history of disturbance, the restoration potential for Pine Station NP is excellent, thanks to a highly-diverse and forgiving native seedbank, the continued support of many grantors for restoration contracts, and the cooperation of partners such as the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy, and many others.
