Event Description:

From creating prairies and building dugout canoes to keeping warm and cooking food, fire is arguably the single most important human technology, and no people anywhere have been known to exist without it.  Trees are one of the most majestic and important members of the natural world.  Bring a lawn chair or blanket for this family friendly event outside the historical Stanley Schoolhouse as we learn from Erik about Fire & Tree Resources.

  • August 22, 2 pm Wild Cordage and Stringy stuff. Join Erik for an older version of  "string theory". We will explore the fiber plants of Chain O' Lakes State Park and learn to make string and simple twined cloth - and the best part is that it can be done with no tools, just our bare hands. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for this family friendly event outside the historic Stanley Schoolhouse. (1 hour)
  • August 29, 11 am Paddle a Dugout Log Canoe.  Come paddle a replica historic dugout canoe! Dugouts were at one time the most important watercraft on the Chain O'Lakes waterways. They are fun to paddle, very tough and durable, and do not sink when capsized. Come experience boating the old way!  This come and go program will be from 10 am- 1 pm at Boat Rental.
