Michigan City Public Library,
100 E. 4th St.
Michigan City, IN

The Michigan City Historical Society and Old Lighthouse Museum in conjunction with the Michigan City Public Library, 100 E. 4th St., will host a special program on Tuesday evening June 26 at 6:30 pm (CST) at the recently renovated library building. Historian and author Christopher Siriano will speak on the topic of The House of David; a religious sect that flourished in Berrien County Michigan in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Siriano is author of the book "The House of David" and Director of The House of David Museum located in St. Joseph Michigan. The House of David was founded by fiery preacher Benjamin Purnell and his wife Mary in the late 1800's and eventually grew to more than 1,000 members in Southwest Michigan and around the world. The sect is famous for its bearded baseball team but also built mansions for its members, restaurants, hotels and even an amusement park in the area, much of which still exists today. In addition to these accomplishments the House of David owned cruise ships, factories, a diamond mine and a gold mine. Cultural influences included an orchestra, art studio and vaudeville acts which were sponsored by the sect. Although only a few members still follow Purnell's teachings today the influences of this religious movement can still be felt today in Southwest Michigan. This program is free to the public.
