Twin Swamps Nature Preserve Guided Hike, Posey County
Start Date: 6/2/2018Start Time: 10:00 AM
End Date: 6/2/2018End Time: 12:00 PM
Event Description:

The Division of Nature Preserves is teaming up with some of our partner organizations and land trusts to hold a series of  hikes on nature preserves.  The partner for this hike is INPAWS - Indiana Native Plant and Wildflower Society.

Note:  This hike starts at 9 am Central Time Zone and 10 am Eastern Time Zone

Twin Swamps consists of a swamp cottonwood-bald cypress swamp and an overcup oak swamp, with an area of southern flatwoods between the two.  This preserve is one of the few existing remnants of such communities which once occurred over large portions of the Ohio and Wabash River Valleys.  Swamp white oak, shagbark hickory, cherrybark oak and pin oak are a few of the species which can be observed in the flatwoods section of the preserve.  In the swamps, you can see large bald cypress, swamp cottonwood, and overcup oak trees.   Twin Swamps is home to many bird species normally associated with this type of habitat, such as the Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and the brilliantly colored Prothonotary Warbler.

Directions:  We will meet at the Hovey Lake Fish & Wildlife Areas first parking lot on the right, then carpool to the nature preserve only a few miles west.  From Mt. Vernon, take SR 62 west to SR 69 south, follow this a little more than 8.0 miles,  until it ends at Hovey Lake Fish and Wildlife Area, park at the first lot on the right before entering the boat ramp parking area.
