Arts in the Parks presents Music in Nature, original music honoring Fort Harrison State Park
Start Date: 4/28/2018Start Time: 2:00 PM
End Date: 4/28/2018End Time: 3:00 PM
Event Description:

Listen to classical music written by an Indianapolis composer to celebrate Fort Harrison State Park at the park’s Sycamore Shelter, April 28.

The premiere concert of “Three Peacetime Images” by Rob Funkhouser starts at 2 p.m. and is part of the Indiana Arts Commission’s Arts in the Parks and Historic Sites Program.

Classical Music Indy commissioned Funkhouser to tell the story of the park’s creatures in three movements. In the first movement, percussion instruments imitate the sound of woodpeckers. The second movement’s melodicas and alto saxophone stand in for frogs croaking. As a finale, Funkhouser incorporates a one-of-a-kind “plank marimba” to evoke the visual excitement of lightning bugs.

Performers for the premiere will be Hannah Carlson and Corey Denhamon on percussion and Amanda Gardier on saxophone.

Future performance dates at Fort Harrison are June 17 and Sept. 22, both at 2 p.m. The concerts are supported by the Indiana Arts Commission and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

The performances are free after paying the standard entrance fee of $7 per in-state vehicle and $9 per out-of-state vehicle.

Fort Harrison State Park (stateparks.IN.gov/2982.htm) is at 5753 Glenn Road, Indianapolis, 46216.
