Gypsy moth treatments for today completed
Start Date: 5/16/2017
Event Description:
The first round of aerial treatments to slow the spread of gypsy moths in Fulton, Kosciusko, Marshall, Porter and Tippecanoe counties was completed today, May 16.

The first round involved using a crop duster airplane to spray the bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki, often referred to as Btk, into the treetops of infested areas where gypsy moth caterpillars feed. Btk occurs naturally in soil and kills the caterpillars as they feed on leaves.

The second round of treatments, which involves using mating disruption to control gypsy moths, is expected to begin the third week of June in Fulton, Kosciusko, Miami, Porter, and Wabash counties.

The mating-disruption process falsely indicates an abundance of female moths in the area. The male moths, being misled, fail to mate, and no offspring are produced to eat the tree leaves the next year.

Detailed maps of the treatment sites are at

Further details about mating-disruption treatments will be announced in a news release in June.
The gypsy moth is an invasive species and is the most serious forest and urban landscape pest in the United States.
