Event Description: Shrader-Weaver Nature Preserve, "a National Natural Landmark"
This special hike celebrates Division of Nature Preserves 50th anniversary!
This preserve offers a pre-European settlement hike through one of Indiana's finest examples of old growth beech-maple forest. The majestic trees have endured by those who valued their grace and provide an experience that few in the last century have seen in Indiana or Midwest. Another trail will demonstrate how natural succession transitions open pasture to a developing forest. Come experience the natural history of what Indiana was and will be again in Fayette County.
From Bentonville go 1 mile east on CR 700N, then 1.75 miles south on CR 450W to a marked parking lot. There are 2 self- guiding trails in this preserve; one goes through the old-growth upland forest and the other through the old field and lowland forest. A caretaker lives on the property.
