Event Description:
THE STORY BEHIND  THE CCC TRIBUTE TREE

What is now determined the first light show at Ouabache State Park is being celebrated 80 years later with the CCC Tribute Tree at the Wonderland of Lights 2019. First Bank of Berne in Bluffton, partnered with the Friends of Ouabache and Ouabache State Park to bring the Tribute Tree to the show. The tree would not have happened without their support.

According to the Evening News Banner of December 19,1939, VM Simmons, head of the Department of Public Works, instructed Don Hammond, superintendent of the State Forest to create a light display.  The display was created using the flagpole that stood near the Nursery Service Building.  The first tree consisted of 16 strands of 16 blue lights hung from the flagpole near the building. The diameter at the bottom was 32 feet.  It was quite the spectacle and visitors drove from miles around to see such a display.  The Banner declared it "one of the largest displays in the country."

The Tribute Tree keeps with the tradition of the 16 strands of blue lights but the number per strand is quite different.  Located at the flag pole near the CCC monument, the Tribute Tree stands proud, surrounded by the 13 towering pines that symbolize the original 13 colonies.

Even though the nursery building is no longer there and the bright eyes of the CCC workers that gathered around the tree have dimmed, we pause to give tribute and remember those before us who enjoyed our forest and all it has to offer.

The tree will be on display during the Wonderland of Lights that runs every evening, 6 pm to 9 pm, December 4 through Dec. 31.  Admission to the event is $5.
