Event Description:
The Indiana Dunes State Park is holding its annual fall owl banding research and education station from October 12-November 18. Visitors may come to the park’s nature center after sunset on Thursdays through Sundays during the season to learn about the special program. Guests will have an opportunity to see a live owl up-close during the banding process. After paying the standard entrance gate fees, evening presentations are free and begin at 7:00 PM CST in October, then 6:00 PM CST starting on November 4.

Indiana Audubon Society is partnering with the state park to sponsor the program and provide the licensed banding staff for this technical research and education program.  Over 1,500 visitors watch the owl research each year, creating one of the most visited owl banding stations in the United States.  After learning about the program, visitors wait at the nature center as banding staff check special nets throughout the dunes on an hourly basis.  The Friends of the Indiana Dunes will provide hot cocoa and marshmallows as eager children and adults wait to see if any owls are caught.
Banding nights are weather dependent. Visitors are advised to call ahead to confirm banding will take place on any public night.  Special behind-the-scenes nights are offered on October 26, 27, 31, and November 1, 2, 3, and 4. Space is limited.  Visit www.indianaaudubon.org/events to register for these events.
