Halloween Camping Weekend, Turkey Run & Shades State Parks

Event Description:

Staff at Turkey Run Park will be hosting fun activities all weekend, with Halloween events on Saturday afternoon and evening. Activities include a Friday evening “Owl Prowl”, costume contest, trick or treating, and a monster egg hunt on Saturday.

Friday, October 25, 2019

10 a.m. Help Feed the Birds. Come to the Turkey Run Nature Center to help put out seed, suet, and nectar, and then watch as wild birds and squirrels interact.

2 p.m. - Star Show. Star gazing is as old as time. Join in that world wide tradition, but indoors in the Turkey Run State Park Nature Center. Learn if any meteor showers are coming, what constellations are visible, and the stories attached to them. Program starts promptly at 2pm and doors close at 2:05pm. Reservations Recommended for weekends. Seats can only be reserved in-person, day of the program.

3 p.m. Lusk Home Tour. Visit the historic home of Turkey Run's first stewards. Find out the unique impacts this family had on Turkey Run State Park. Tours start promptly at 3pm and involve stairs. Hike out to the Lusk Home on Trail 1 or 4. Limited parking is available behind the Lusk Home.

8 p.m. Owl Prowl. Take a night-time stroll in search of our silent hunters. We'll find out what makes owls the perfect nocturnal predator. Hike will involve steps. Meet at the Turkey Run State Park Nature Center.

 8 p.m. Bat-tastic Voyage at Shades State Park. Join a Naturalist for a night time adventure. With the help of technology, we will be able to listen in on the bats flying overhead. Meet at the Shades State Park amphitheater to learn about Indiana's native bats, and then search for them.

4 p.m. Costume Contest. Put on your best costume and come to the Campground Store. Contest will be broken up into age brackets.

5 - 6:30 p.m. Trick-or-Treating. Due to limited parking, the campground will be reduced to only foot traffic during this time. Note: Trick-or-treating is only for those camping within the State Park campground.

8 p.m. Monster Egg Hunt. Search for monster eggs in the grassy field by the pool. The field will be broken into age groups so everyone will have a fair share. Hunt begins promptly at 8pm.

CAMPSITE DECORATING CONTEST AT TURKEY RUN. FRIDAY-SATURDAY NIGHT! 
Campers can pick up their voting sheets as they enter from the campground gatehouse. Each campsite gets only ONE ballet. You cannot vote for your own site. Ballets need to be turned in to the Gatehouse by 10pm Saturday.
The top 3 sites will receive 2020 annual entrance passes. 1st and 2nd place will receive an additional prize. Winner announcements will be posted at the Nature Center, Entrance Gate, and Campground Gate Sunday morning. Prizes will be delivered to the winning sites Sunday morning.
