Minnehaha Fish & Wildlife Area to close
Start Date: 1/27/2016 All Day
Event Description:

Minnehaha Fish and Wildlife Area, a 3,500-acre property in Sullivan County managed by the DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife, will close April 1.

Minnehaha FWA was created in 1985, when DNR leased 12,500 acres to manage for recreational use. Over the years, the size of the facility was reduced to its current size.

On Jan. 12, American Land Holdings of Indiana, a subsidiary of Peabody Energy, terminated the lease with DNR, which will result in the April closure. DNR staff members are working to remove State-owned assets from the property and will be removing DNR signs prior to the closing date.

“Peabody Energy has been a valuable partner in making recreational lands available for public use for many years,” said Mark Reiter, DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife director. “We will remain in communication for possible future partnerships.”

Despite the closure of Minnehaha, the DNR manages several other options in the area for outdoor enthusiasts — Fairbanks Landing FWA (Sullivan County), Goose Pond and Hillenbrand FWAs (Greene County), and Chinook and Wabashiki FWAs (Vigo County). Also nearby are Greene-Sullivan State Forest, Shakamak State Park, and Redbird State Recreation Area.

Combined, they offer roughly 36,600 acres of places for a range of outdoor activities.
