[DNR] Meeting on Boonville reclamation project, Jan. 16
Start Date: 1/16/2014Start Time: 2:00 PM
End Date: 1/16/2014End Time: 7:00 PM
Event Description:
At a Jan. 16 open house in Boonville, residents can learn about efforts to stabilize streets and other public areas threatened by abandoned underground coal mines.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Reclamation will host the open house at the Boonville-Warrick County Public Library from 2 to7 p.m. CST.

DNR staff will share details of a project to stabilize public areas threatened by subsidence, or surface collapse above underground mines. Construction bids are scheduled to be taken early in the year with construction in early to mid-spring. Work should be complete by the end of summer.

According to Ray Brumfiel, project coordinator, the meeting is to share information with residents and gather any new information that might affect construction.

“We are going to be in a residential area and we want folks to know what is happening in front of their homes,” Brumfiel said. “We are simply moving proactively to do what we can to prevent damage to roads and other public structures in this area.”

Work will focus primarily on East Main, South Charlton, Railroad, Nicholas and Oakdale streets. Other streets may be indirectly affected.

The work is funded through the Abandoned Mine Lands portion of the federal mining and reclamation program, and administered for Indiana through DNR.

By law, the stabilization project cannot address problems on private property, except to remedy imminent public hazards. However, the state offers a mine subsidence insurance program. DNR strongly encourages property owners to pursue that option. Normal homeowner insurance does not cover subsidence damage.

For more information on mine subsidence insurance, contact the Indiana Subsidence Insurance Fund at the Indiana Department of Insurance at (317) 232-2385, or toll-free in Indiana at (800) 622-4461, or see (click on “Types of Insurance”).

For more information on the stabilization project, call the DNR Division of Reclamation field office in Jasonville at (812) 665-2207, or toll free in Indiana at (800) 772-6463.
