[DNR] Mounds SP to offer Leopold Bench Workshop, Jan. 11
Start Date: 1/11/2014Start Time: 1:00 PM
End Date: 1/11/2014
Event Description:
Participants in a Jan. 11 workshop at Mounds State Park can build their own “Leopold Bench.”

The simple, classic wooden benches were designed by Aldo Leopold, father of the modern conservation movement, who used the benches outdoors to write, reflect and observe nature.

These benches have become popular in parks throughout the country.

“Aldo Leopold’s legacy has been preserved through his essays in books such as ‘A Sand County Almanac’,” said Mounds interpretive naturalist Jessica Rosier. “It’s our hope that folks attending the workshop will be inspired to sit on their bench and contemplate how they can help the environment.”

The workshop will be at 1 p.m. in the visitors center. Space is limited, and advance registration is required by calling (765) 649-8128. The workshop costs $30, which includes all materials and light refreshments.

Leopold-themed events continue on Sunday, Jan. 12. The public can attend a free screening of “Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time” at the visitors center. The hour-long film highlights the conservationist's career, tracing how he shaped and influenced the modern environmental movement. Cocoa will be provided, and candy will be available for purchase.

Mounds State Park ( is at 4306 Mounds Road, Anderson, 46017.
