Event Description:

Mysterious Hills Winter Hike Series

We are offering something New this winter as the cold takes hold in the hills.... that's right, we are going hiking! Dust off those hiking boots, bust out those coats, gloves, scarves, and hats and head out to see some of the mysterious things that are hiding in the woods of Brown County! Trek out to see a lake that was started but never finished, a village that once existed, a quarry that was used to build things in the park, or one of the other interesting hikes we have to offer.

These hikes will meet at 11am at the Brown County State Park Nature Center.... we will talk about the places a bit, get the back story, then carpool to the trail head to begin our hike. Each hike is different so, if you need more information on them feel free to contact the Nature Center at 812-988-5240 or e-mail

Mysterious Hills
Winter Hike Series 2018/2019

December 22nd, 2018: Hike to Kelp Village
This hike will leave from the Nature Center and head down the ruggedly-rated Trail 6 toward Strahl Lake. We will then proceed around the lake and down the park road toward on old village area known as Kelp Village. After spending some time searching the area for remnants of the village, we will then return the way we came, climbing back up to the Nature Center from Strahl Lake. This hike will be approx. 3 Miles long and last 1.5 hours. Be sure to dress for the weather, dressing in layers as the uphill climb can get a bit warm.

January 1st, 2019: First Day Hike- Bridges, Tunnels, and Interesting Places
This hike will meet and leave from the Abe Martin Lodge, head down Trail 3 to see some of the park’s unique structures, including a chance to walk across the oldest bridge in the state! Our journey will conclude with a visit to one of our trailside fireplaces where we will enjoy a warm fire and some hot chocolate before returning to the Abe Martin Lodge. This hike will travel approx. 2 miles, and last about 1 hour depending on time spent at the warming station. Be sure to dress for the weather!

January 19th, 2019: Deserter's Cave Hike
Meet for this Hike at the Nature Center where our hike will begin. We will start our journey by heading south along the park road for approx. 1 mile. Then we will trek into the woods off trail to Deserter's Cave. Please know that this section of off-trail hiking will be rugged and steep so we will take it slow. In total this hike will be about 2 miles long and last a little over an hour. Please be sure to dress for the weather, and bring your hiking boots as the steep hillside could be tough to navigate.

February 9th, 2019: Curious Quarry Hike
We will meet at the Nature Center for this hike before carpooling to the trailhead to begin our hike. This hike will be the longest of the series, and will take us along Horse Trail A for about 1.5 miles, then onto trail 17 for another .5 miles. In total, this hike will be about 4 miles long. The trail along this route can also be quite rugged, including some sloppy areas, so please bring your hiking boots and be ready for a good trek. We will spend some time exploring the quarry area before heading back to the trailhead.

February 16th and March 30th, 2019: Hike to the Lake that Never Was
Head over to the Nature Center to meet for this exciting hike. We will get our game plan together, then carpool to the trailhead to start our hike. Our hike will take us along Horse Trail B, descending into Hidden Valley and to the dam site. This hike will be quite rugged and includes several creek crossings. The distance will be approx. 2 miles round trip, and will take us about 1.5 hours to complete. Please dress for the weather and the creek crossings, including footwear you don’t mind getting wet or that will keep your feet dry and warm.

March 2nd, 2019: How did that boulder get in that tree?....Hike
We will again be meeting for this hike at the Nature Center where we will get everyone together, then carpool to the trailhead. This hike will take us a short distance down Horse Trail A before trekking off trail towards one of the most beautiful places in the park. The distance for this hike is approx. 2 miles round trip and will last about 1.5 hours. This hike is a bit rugged so be sure to dress for the weather, and bring those hiking boots as we will be heading off trail for the majority of the hike.

March 9th, 2019: 10 o'clock Line Nature Preserve Hike

Meet at the Nature Center for this hike where we will get together before carpooling to the trailhead and heading out along a fire trail towards the 10 O'clock Line Nature Preserve. After about 1 mile on the fire trail we will meet up with Horse Trail B for a hike around the Nature Preserve. After hiking a bit we will then hike back to the trailhead. The distance for this hike is approx. 2.5 miles, and will last about 2 hours. This hike is a bit rugged, so be sure to dress for the weather and bring those hiking boots.


Advanced registration is not necessary and there is no limit on attendance, so feel free to get your group together and come along for these exciting hikes.  

All Hikes start at 11:00am. Some will include a quick carpool to the trailhead, so please be ready to provide your own transportation.

Dogs are more than welcome to join us as long as they are on a 6 ft. leash and get along well with other dogs and humans alike.

Please be sure to dress for the weather and wear proper footwear for these hikes. Read these descriptions and make sure this is something you and/or your group are up for. Bring plenty of water as well as snacks for these adventures.

In extreme weather conditions cancellations may be necessary, but we will go in the snow! Check our website and Facebook for conditions and cancellation information.
